I booked this trip to celebrate my daughter’s high school graduation. Unfortunately, two weeks before our scheduled stay, I became seriously ill and was prescribed multiple antibiotics in hopes of recovering in time. Just two days before our departure, I relapsed and felt worse than ever.
I reached out to the host, Robert, to see if we could reschedule, especially since there were rooms available in late August and September. Despite explaining the situation and offering a doctor’s note, as well as having my doctor willing to speak with him directly, Robert refused to accommodate any changes and strictly enforced his no-refund, no-cancellation policy.
After multiple attempts to resolve the issue with both Robert and Airbnb, it became clear that Robert had no concern for my well-being or that of my family. I was also concerned about the health of other guests, as I was highly contagious at the time.
Feeling I had no choice, and unwilling to lose the money I paid, I made the five-hour trip to Lake George while battling a 101-degree fever, strep throat, and cellulitis.
When we arrived, we were shocked by what we saw. We had expected to stay at someone’s personal home, maybe with a few other guests, something more like a bed and breakfast. Instead, it turned out to be a motel with over 50 rooms/units. The parking situation was a nightmare. If you drive a nice car, I wouldn’t recommend bringing it, spaces are extremely tight, and navigating the lot requires weaving around awkward turns just to get in and out. Robert’s photos are extremely misleading and don’t reflect the true condition of the property. The exterior was completely outdated and unkempt. While the room was nicely decorated, it was far from clean. The windows were dirty, the TV was covered in fingerprints, and the fans were caked with dust. The fireplace glass hadn’t been cleaned, and the bathroom was unpleasant. To top it off, when the kids went to lie down, they found potato chips scattered along the side of the bed. The pool and hot tub were extremely dirty, giving the impression that no one was maintaining the property at all.
We did our best to make the most of the trip. In the mornings, my fever would go down and my throat felt manageable, so I was able to enjoy a few moments with my family. But by midday, the fever would return, and I was back in bed.
One morning, I went to the front desk because the kids wanted to go kayaking. The group before us had just returned their equipment, and without any cleaning or disinfecting, the staff immediately handed us the same paddles and life jackets. The same thing happened when we returned ours, no sanitation whatsoever. Knowing I was contagious, it’s unsettling to think my germs were likely passed on to the next guests.
Robert, you claim to be a “family man,” but just like your misleading photos, that couldn’t be further from the truth. According to the staff, you’re never on-site, and honestly, it shows. Instead of being a responsible host, you seem more focused on manipulating people into booking with you, only to hit them with excessive and unreasonable policies, like charging $30 if someone forgets to wash a single dish. While your housekeepers aren’t dishwashers, your guests certainly shouldn’t be cleaning up after the previous ones either.
If you actually showed up and took responsibility for the property, maybe it wouldn’t be in such poor condition. And for the record, the most laughable part of this entire experience, more than you calling yourself a “host” is your threat to call the cops on me. I was so angry about how you treated me and my family that I told you I wanted to cough right in your kid’s face….just to give you a taste of what it feels like to have your plans and special moments completely ruined, the way you ruined my daughter’s weekend. I’m pretty sure the cops would’ve laughed in your face for wasting their time with something so ridiculous.
Bottom line: I would not recommend this place to anyone—for many reasons. I’d love to add pictures, but it...

Read moreWe have stayed at the Sundowner Motel since Jeff and Ann owned it. Probably has to be 30 years now. We were sad to see them leave, but glad that they retired. Good for them.|The new owners, who own a couple of places in Lake George, did some remodeling and the place is beautiful. Everything has a log cabin feel to it. They combined 2 rooms and made one large that sleeps 10. I think they have several rooms like that. Also, several of the rooms now have gas grills outside. The beach area is nice and clean and the grassy area has a fire pit that you can use. We were having a family reunion and our son purchased wood and starters and our niece's husband had the stuff to make S'mores, so we did that one night. |Now, on to the staff. Every single one was very happy to help us and accommodate us in every way. Very friendly and great to talk to. I met one staff member on the beach who was cleaning the gas grills down there. There are 3 down there. I started talking to him and asked about the grills. We had brought hamburgers and hot dogs to cook on the beach but had forgotten utensils. He said he would be glad to get them for us if we needed them or we could inquire at the front desk. His name was Kay-Jay (not sure of the spelling but you get the idea.) and he was extremely pleasant to talk to. There is another staff member that I would like to point out how he was towards me. First off, I am 68 and need to walk with a cane for several reasons, one of which is I have diabetic neuropathy in my legs and feet which kind of makes it painful to walk after a while. I am also a heart transplant patient for the last 18 years which causes me to get tired and out of breath when walking a distance. We had taken the Minne-Ha-Ha pirate cruise on Thursday night with our grandchildren and were walking back to the hotel. On the way, we stopped for ice cream at Ben & Jerrys' and continued on. We got to Shepards Park and I had to rest, It was already about 8:45 and we wanted to get back to the Sundowner to see the Thursday fireworks from the beach. After resting at Shepards Park for a while we continued on. I was trying to rush and got to the Surfside and had to stop again. The fireworks started and our granddaughter was already on the beach and we were not there. We started off again and got back to Sundowner but still had to go down the hill to the beach. We were at the top so our car was right there so my wife said she would drive me down. I said no and tried to keep going. I joked and said if one of the staff with a golf cart came by we should borrow it and do that. Then we noticed a golf cart with a couple of staff people sitting in it watching the fireworks. My wife asked about it and the driver, who said his name was Dean, said he would be glad to drive me down. He not only took me to the beach, but he got out and assisted me down to the water's edge where our daughter was waiting with our granddaughter Lily. He stayed with me for a while and then left after getting me a chair. After the fireworks, we started walking up the hill, and I didn't get 20 feet, when out from between 2 cars, came a gold cart. There was Dean and he had me get in and took me up the hill to our room. I would like to commend him for his kindness to someone who was in need of assistance. Overall, our stay at the Sundowner was very pleasant and we will be glad to stay there again in the future. Oh, and our granddaughter, Lily, loved it there and already said she wants to come back with Gramma and Poppa. Kudos to Kay-Jay, Dean, and the entire staff of the Sundowner for a...
