I would give 5 stars based on the room/hotel itself, but the reservation process was quite difficult, hence the deduction of a star. We were trying to make the reservation while traveling, for the same night. The website indicated they had two king rooms available and one queen, but it would not allow us to reserve one. I called, left a detailed message and asked for a return call in order to make the reservation--nothing. We really did want to stay there, as it looked so cool and had such good reviews, so I tried again. My husband also tried to reserve online with no luck, but then got a call from Sandra, which could only have come from his attempt to reserve online, a process which required him to input his phone number.
So why she saw that and called him, but did not return my calls, I don't know...She told him she was not at the property, and was not 'at the computer,' so she couldn't help us. We understood that it was a small operation, but if you can't be available for phone or in-person reservations, then the website should be functioning if you have available rooms, it seems. That's revenue that's lost.
I was not in on the conversation my husband had with her, and it didn't make sense to me, so I made one final attempt on the phone. Still no answer but she called me back, saying she 'saw she had a missed call' (apparently she had never gotten my earlier voice messages). After reiterating what she'd told my husband about not being able to make a reservation for us because she didn't have access to a computer, she did say that she might be in the office at 5:30, so to call back if we couldn't find anywhere else. I did call, she did answer, she did reserve the room for us, but wasn't there when we arrived, so I remain mystified why this couldn't have been accomplished without her physically in the office.
At any rate--after all this--we loved the room, loved the motel, saw a beautiful sunset across the street, and were really pleased it all worked out in the end. Everything was spotlessly clean, which is very important to me; I'm finicky about floors and almost never traipse around a hotel room barefoot, no matter how expensive or nice it is, but the floors were squeaky clean and felt great, and the funky decor was perfect. Sandra has managed the old-time beachy motel vibe with none of the worn or grungy feel that usually accompanies it (we stayed at just such a place a few days earlier near Melbourne Beach).
We do like to be able to walk from our accommodations to coffee shops and restaurants and, unless we missed something, that's not possible from here, but on the other hand, that probably keeps it quieter. A couple of reviewers complained about the beds, but ours was very comfortable. Only improvement would be to have some kind of shade for the vertical window in the room door--the hallway light coming through it bothered my husband somewhat; he stacked a couple pillows on a chair up against the door to block it. This was just kind of an overnight, but I would absolutely stay here again if I wanted a few quiet days on the beach.
Should also add that once the reservation finally got made, Sandra followed up to check on us, and was very responsive about dinner suggestions, etc. A couple of reviewers have complained about not receiving consideration, in the face of unexpected developments/illnesses, etc., and while I sympathize, I recall that it was made pretty explicit. People really can't complain when a policy they agreed to at the time of reservation is enforced, and if the option of cancellation is important, reservations without it should...
Read moreWe recently spent a long weekend at the Sunset Inn & Cottages in Treasure Island, and the entire experience far exceeded my expectations. I travel for a living and deciding to "travel" for relaxation is risky. It was the perfect quiet weekend.
The Inn has been completely renovated, yet maintained its integrity of a 1940's "feel". The Inn is located on the south end of Treasure Island, which was perfect and away from the "touristy" area up the road. It was quiet, we were less than 100 steps from the beach, walking distance to a couple of restaurants, and a $4 Uber ride to other restaurants.
We stayed in one of the cottages and it was plenty of room and super cute! It had a nice size bedroom with night stands on both sides, a dresser, and nice size closet with wood hangers. The bed was also very comfy! The living room and kitchen area were fully furnished and stocked with a very comfy couch, breakfast table, full-size fridge, and a stove. It had everything you would need to stay in, if you so chose, including grills right outside in the courtyard under the decorative lights. Oh, and it has Wifi!!
Laurie is the innkeeper and she could not have been more accommodating. She shared the story of how they bought the inn and it's been a labor of love renovating. We genuinely felt like guests in someone's home as opposed to a hotel. She even gave us paddle boarding tips! Laurie also provided very nice beach chairs and beach towels! It was so nice to simply walk out our front door and be steps away from the beach, as opposed to being in a high-rise condo, packing everything up, waiting for an elevator, and making the journey down to the beach. The Inn is literally steps away from the beach.
I cannot say enough how much we enjoyed staying at the Sunset Inn & Cottages. The quaintness of the inn coupled with Laurie's kindness and providing anything you would need, it was the perfect quiet weekend getaway. It would also be a great place for a group of friends or families. The courtyard is great and would also be a great place for a small wedding reception!
We are already planning our next long weekend to visit Laurie...
Read moreMy two sister's and I did a sister's trip last year and the place was nice and clean. Right across from the beach. So, we decided we would do a trip here every year. I booked our trip for August 3rd 2018 on June 19th 2018. Unfortunately, my brother in law had a heart attack a few days later and was in ICU on life support and so on. There was no way he would be ok, up and moving on his own by the trip date. So, I called has soon has I knew we wouldn't be able to make it and explained what happen on June 28th 2018. The lady I spoke with said that they would keep the deposit, (which I already knew would happen) and she said I would have a year to use it. Then a lady calls on August 3rd 2018, confirming my check in. I was totally surprised by this and again I explained what happened and what I was told on June 28th 2018. She went off about who did I talk too? It sounded like the same lady I spoke to on June 28th, so I said I think I talked to you. She mumbled something and said sorry about your brother in law. Then said, well we are keeping the deposit, sorry and hung up before I could say anything. I understand the deposit is non refundable but I think when one of the employees or whoever I spoke to on June 28th told me I would have a year to use it but then I get a call today to confirm check in and the lady acts like she knew nothing about it. I didn't even know what to say. Except, I feel like I gave plenty of time and they should follow through with what I was told on the phone on June 28th. But, I'd rather just take the lost and go somewhere else after being hung up on in that way. You can't predict when you're going to have a family emergency. I felt like I gave plenty of time for...
