“The Worst Hotel on the East Coast!”
My complaint with Marjac Suites is air Conditioner issues. Poor Management. Poor Air Quality. On 8/26/16 Friday, I checked into the Marjac Suites Hotel for a two-day concert at around 1:00 pm, in suite 605 on the 6th floor, and was faced with a suite without air. The suite sleeps six and all six guest shared the small suite. After contacting the front desk to inform them of air conditioner not working, I was provided with three fans (2 rotating fans and one box fan), in which I have pictures to prove this. I was told by staff that the air would be working before late evening. Me and my 5 guest went to the beach at 3:00 pm and returned at 7:00 pm. When we returned to the suite, the air issue had not been resolved. I contacted the front desk again and was told that the maintenance had left for the day. I asked if there was anything that could be done, and was promised to have issue resolved early in the morning. At 7:30 am, I contacted the front desk pertaining to the promise made to fix the air. The front desk indicated that maintenance would not be in until 9:30 am; so I waited. At 10:30 am, I called front desk again inquiring about the repair of AC. Front desk staff indicated that they will send someone up to the suite (605). The maintenance staff arrived to room at 12:00 pm (I have pictures of the two men working on AC). Paul assured me that the Air was working and that it will take about an hour to kick-in. He also assured me that he would not leave until issue is resolved. Me and my guest went down to the beach at 3:00 pm and returned at 6:00 pm. The suite thermostat read 85 degrees (I have picture of this too). I contacted the front desk again, and was told that the maintenance had left for the day. I became irritated and began having issues with sweating profusely, due to it being in the high '90's in Virginia Beach. One of my guest who has COPD began complaining of breathing issues and my cousin with asthma stated that she could not stay any longer. Therefore, those two guest left Virginia Beach and went back home to North Carolina. I called to the front desk and demanded a refund that me and the rest of my guest was going to check out. I indicated that they had lied to us since Friday check in and now it is Saturday almost 8:00 pm and we are still without air. I stated that we had wasted food that had to be thrown out because we could not cook in the suite, due to heat issues. I went down to the front desk and asked to speak with a manager and was told that one was not on duty. I reminded the front desk that I wanted to check out and that two of my guest had already left, I was then offered a room on the 7th floor, but without a view which I had already paid for when reserving the suite. I declined the offer when another guest in the hotel overheard the conversation and stated that she had bedbugs in the room on the same floor and showed me the picture she took of the bed bugs (which I have her name and telephone number) and I asked if she would send the picture to me (and she did). I went back to my room to pack and inform my guest of the offer to switch rooms and bed bug issues. While we were packing the staff knocked on the door asking us to leave. I indicated that we were in the process of packing and requested that the Marjac Suites refund a full payment of the two days. The staff indicated that she could only refund one day. I stated that the it was unacceptable, considering we had no air since check-in Friday and was not offered any accommodations until Saturday night (hours before check-out at 11:00 am Sunday) and would not except the accommodation for a room that was not comparable to the one that we paid for, which included a view of the stage where the two-day concert performers were located and on a floor with bed bugs. By the way, they rented the same room to another guest, 10 minutes after we...
Read moreI like to rely on fair reviews and I try to leave them as well. I knew before arriving that this was not a top notch hotel. I feel like it was adequate for what I expected but I’ll share pros and cons.
Pros: Room looked and smelled clean Flooring looked new and nice. All appliances worked Beds were comfortable View was AMAZING (best part) Adequate but bare minimum (4 small coffee cups, 4 forks, spoons, knives, plates, one sharper knife and pot and pan that could have been picked up at any goodwill)
Cons: Big gap under entry door and deck door. Let in heat and noise. Not enough towels and we had to retrieve ourselves. Elevator was a big problem! It was tiny! It could barely accommodate luggage cart. You would use stairs because it’s faster. Wait and wait.. and when it FINALLY arrives, it’s full of either staff with carts or guests. So you send it on and continue to wait . I was on 5th floor and after being on beach all day, it was certainly taxing to make the hike. And no a/c in it. It was stifling. If you are disabled, don’t bother staying here. Security was nonexistent. If I had an issue of security, I feel I would be on my own to handle it. Parking was scarce and TIGHT. The pool always overrun by screaming children and small. The windows need room darkening curtains. Door locks seemed inadequate. Very noisy into the wee hours of the night. A/c worked adequately but noisy The pull out couch was not useable. It felt like laying on metal springs. The orange walls were off putting personally but the attempt at decor was made haha. The coffeemaker was tiny and had to buy one at Walmart. It was $10. For the price, it would be worthwhile upgrade. People need their coffee! The refrigerator leaked and we had a puddle in floor every day. Housekeeping didn’t speak English and insisted I take her phone and speak to someone to explain we needed more time before they cleaned room. While I am respectful of all ethnicities, I feel holding up my hand and shaking my head no was clear. Didn’t enjoy having her phone repeatedly thrusted in my face. As I’m sure you’ve seen in other reviews, unhappy customers had police called and we had similar experience. It WAS unnerving to have irate people and police presence there. The desk clerk locked himself in the office while unknowing patrons walked into a scene. While we didn’t have any problems with front desk personally , it seems to be a recurring theme of hotel. The “furniture” on the balcony was the cheapest of cheap plastic chairs and table that had seen better days.
So overall the cons outweighed the pros. The beach was lovely. My room was adequate to shower and rest (once I hiked the 5 flights). They are on the right track in terms of upgrades, like the flooring but they have a LONG WAY TO GO. If you need a place to collapse after a day in the hot sun, this place will do. IF you are looking for amenities, great service or are particular in any way,...
Read moreUpon arrival, First room:||AC did not work in main room OR bedroom. Neither unit worked. |Television had no volume and remote did not work. |Bathtub had not been cleaned well at all. Dirty! Overall room also poorly cleaned. ||They moved us to another room. |Second room:|Television audio was in Spanish. Remote did not work. |At about 10:00 PM there was standing water in the bathroom that was running back into the bedroom. Grabbed towels and placed them on the floor. |Phone in room did not work. Had to go down to the front desk and ask for maintenance to quickly come to room because water was running everywhere. |BTW my friend and I were exhausted from a deep sea fishing trip and this was the last thing we felt like dealing with. |Maintenance came to room, unclogged the toilet and dried up the floors with towels. I told him it appeared to me the leak was coming from the toilet base. |He went to get more towels for us to be able to use. While he was gone I watched the toilet base and could clearly see that the leak was coming from there. I wiped up water 3 to 4 times from the toilet base and it continued to leak onto the floor. At that point the maintenance guy agreed that was the problem and said he could not fix it that night.||Again, without a phone working I had to go back down to the front desk and asked to be moved to another room only to find out that the hotel was fully booked. I would also add that no offer was ever made to come up and clean and sanitize the floors and the room for us that night. The only thing that was done was towels were used to clean up the water and the overflow from the toilet. It was very uncomfortable/unsettling to sleep in that room knowing this as well as the odor that was in the air.I expressed my displeasure with the entire experience and shared that I did not think it would be fair or reasonable to have to pay the full amount for the stay. The desk clerk shared with me he could not make that decision and I needed to speak with Teresa, the manager in the morning.|I spoke with Teresa and she agreed on the 25% discount for the stay that would be given but we would have to contact you because the reservation was set up through your company and she would hear from you and authorize the 25% discount. |She shared that Expedia had liability as well for the stay and often times gives refunds when there are incidents like this and we should call them/you. |We have yet to fill out the on line survey or Facebook posting request survey or use social media to express our displeasure because we are hoping that this will be resolved in a much better and more appropriate fashion.||Lastly I would want to share that the front desk clerks and the maintenance person were as helpful as they could be and very professional. They did their jobs as best they could under the circumstances. The facility and the room itself was the problem...
