Detailed. Stayed in Room 204 19-22 The view was phenomenal. The room was clean. Only positive points of review. #1 Hotel allowed someone other than us to call & cancel my reservation right before the 72 hour window ended. The only information they asked of them was my name & phone number. I monitor my email, so I was able to save it, but I probably should have just booked somewhere else instead. Upon calling, I was treated as though I had done something wrong by posting about my upcoming trip. The woman who answered the phone said, “maybe next time don’t post it on Facebook.” I think you should ask some information other than common knowledge that is easily found on the internet, before cancelling a reservation. I’ve always been asked to at least confirm the card info before cancelling. The woman had me confirm every bit of information on the reservation & then locked it in stating,” 0 changes would be allowed to be made” & regardless my card would be charged the full amount, “so you better show up.” #2 The entire building is hot. Room is cold, regardless of temp. #3 The ice machine needs cleaned. There were black dots in ice. #4 The balconies above us leaked water almost the entire stay, so I didn’t get to enjoy it much. I called to inform the front desk & was told someone probably dumped a cooler or the ac was leaking, give it 5 min & it should stop. My ac leaked, but never enough to leak off the balcony onto the restaurant roof. #5 The breakfast advertised with the stay is not operating due to covid. I was never informed of that on the internet, the confirmation emails, nor upon check in. The restaurant is ridiculously priced. The cook is not someone I’d be buying food from. The front desk night attendant even suggested we not eat there, go to Mary’s, when we asked when/where the hotel breakfast opened before taking a walk on the beach at 5 am.(fully recommend them- it was excellent) #6 There is a homeless woman living on the beach right in front of the hotel. She was directly in my view. (Photo posted below). She gets up when the sand smoothers come through & moves her stuff onto the smoothed sand. Sleeping on the beach is illegal. She also accosted me on the block in front of the hotel for money for food. I obliged & she got a $9 ice cream blizzard like concoction. On our last night walking the beach, she was laying in her maroon sheet & was yelling at us to shut up & then barking like a dog. #7 We always book a jet tub room at every hotel we stay if possible. The tubs are usually separate from the shower. This hotel has it all in one & the tub together. The tub is ridiculously tall. My wife & I are both average height women. I am 65” & she is 66” tall. I slipped getting into the shower after the beach & was left with an immediately painful huge bruise. I called the front desk to inform them what happened & suggest they get a step, due to it being so tall. I was interrupted & rudely told “sorry you fell, I know its regulation though”. I have taken pictures of the bruise progression & contacted my lawyer here in KY, who suggested I consult with a VA slip & fall lawyer due to the different state. #8 there is no daily housekeeping. Any needs are to be given to the front desk. I called & asked for some toilet paper to be brought up on our last day. The same woman yet again interrupted me before finishing & rudely said “I’m the only person here. You’ll have to come get it yourself. Thanks Bye.” #9 At check out the system already had us checked out. There was no way for her to send my receipt. She would reboot, fix it, & email it to me. I still have not received anything. We were given a $50 refund that was immediately taken back yesterday afternoon. I’m not sure what that was for, nor did I want to call & ask to get someone rude again. We certainly have plans to return to VA Beach, as it is one of our favorite vacation spots, but we will not be returning to The Capes Hotel after this happened with no...
Read moreWhat did we like about staying at the Capes Hotel at Virginia Beach? That's a really good question. The little restaurant that is attached to the hotel is family owned and serves really good food. There is no free breakfast or discounts on anything for staying in the hotel which is a bummer, but we understand.
I suppose the proximity to the beach, stores, and boardwalk was the best. The hotel staff was very kind and understanding even though they didn't resolve any of our issues. It really isn't their fault that the management/owners have allowed this hotel to go downhill.
What didn't we like about staying at the Capes hotel? That's a really hard question to answer since there were so many issues. Before I list them out I do want to say that I went to management the first morning to address each and every issue. I was unable to speak to a manager, but I spoke to the lady at the front desk. She was very understanding of my issue and I feel that she did the best that she could to try to rectify it. However, there was nothing they could do about any of our issues.
The lady at the front desk offered to extend our stay with a free night, but we were unable to due to work the next day. I asked if it were possible to get the free stay at a later date so that we could possibly develop a different opinion of the place the next time. She said she would have to discuss it with the manager and would call us on Monday to let us know.
After gathering our contact information she informed us that they would call us on Monday about our free stay and the issues we've had. I am writing this review on Thursday and still have not heard anything from management. I do not believe that they care about their customers as much as the front desk staff does.
Let's see what they were: •The nightstand had cup rings on it that we're not wiped off from the previous guests. •The power ports that was sitting on the nightstand hadn't been cleaned in probably a year. You could take your fingernail and scrape the gunk off of it. It was so bad! •The TV picture would go green after about 30 minutes of watching TV. •The bed itself was extremely uncomfortable. The headboard was broken and the bed sheets had brown stains. •On our first morning I tried to make a cup of coffee, put the coffee maker was broke and wouldn't work. •The bathroom vent was falling from the ceiling and was so loud that it was difficult to even use it. •The toilet paper holder in the bathroom was hanging out the wall and would only hold a roll of toilet paper if you strategically placed it like in a game of Jenga. As soon as you would sit down on the toilet, bump it with your elbow, or try to pull a piece off of it it would fall apart and the toilet paper would go rolling on the floor. •When using the jacuzzi tub the water came out the side of the faucet, drained a little from the cold side knob, and when we tried to stand up both of the safety bars popped off. •The cover, to the AC/heater unit that was sticking through the wall, wasn't attached to the unit. Every time we needed to adjust the temperature in the room we would have to lift up the panel lift up the front cover, make adjustments, then close it, and let it hang.
I have pictures and videos to support each and everything that I...
Read moreMy wife and I wanted to find a room to rent with some charm that wasn't just another chain hotel and we absolutely found it with the Capes Hotel. Located right off of the boardwalk we were able to see the beach from our balcony as well as listen to a number of live bands who set up on the boardwalk over our stay.
The hotel is a bit old-fashioned and doesn't have some modern conveniences that travelers might expect, such as USB ports in the room or room service. But the rooms are well furnished with a kitchenette that includes a mini fridge (large enough for bottles of soda and leftovers), a microwave, and a sink. There was also a bottle opener in the bathroom, built right into the wall. At first my wife and I wondered why, but it ended up being very convenient. The wi-fi never gave us any problems at all, even when streaming from an Amazon fire stick.
We went for the Queen Whirlpool Deluxe room, and the whirlpool tub was amazing. My wife and I tend to go for rooms that have whirlpool tubs in them, and this is easily the largest one we've ever had. Instead of the 'triangle' shape that most of them tend to be this one is like an oversized bathtub that is nearly as long as the bed and about half as wide. Since it is next to the bed you can easily watch TV from it, and there is a step and handle to make getting in or out very easy. If you are looking for something to make a romantic getaway special this will absolutely fit the bill.
The staff is out of this world. From the person who we spoke to on the phone who answered all of our questions, to the person who checked us in and gave us a ton of local recommendations, to the person who helped us find food options at 3 in the morning, everyone we talked to was warm and friendly and made us genuinely feel welcome. The room was very quiet as well, which was helped quite a bit by the in house restaurant having mostly outdoor seating and being closed during extreme weather. There is a wide assortment of restaurants and bars within a short walk, and every one the staff recommended was wonderful.
The only negative that we experienced is parking. The hotel has a small lot right in front and a second lot that was only open once during our stay, and there isn't much room to maneuver. It wasn't a problem for us, but you may have some difficulty if you came with a rented van or something similar.
We will definitely be...
