My wife and I average 35-40 nights a year at Best Western and have been in the top tier of the Best Western rewards program for years. We also spend a similar amount of time at Comfort Inns, which are usually in the same areas as Best Western. Recently, my wife mistakenly made a reservation at the Best Western Westgate Inn on the same night as a Comfort Inn. I realized her mistake 27 hours before our check-in time at the hotels.
I telephoned the Westgate Best Western 27 hours before our check-in time and asked if we could change the reservation from the Friday night scheduled in error to Thursday night. After being transferred through two people, I finally spoke with the general manager of the Westgate Best Western, who told me that I could make a new reservation for Thursday night, but that the hotel has a strict 48-hour cancellation policy and we were too late to cancel the Friday night reservation. "It is a strict policy, very strict," he said.
Well, after spending as much money as I have over the years at Best Western, hearing this buffoon tell me about the strict policy when the hotel is obviously underbooked made me rethink the Best Western choice generally. I telephoned the Comfort Inn, and the person at the desk who answered the phone helped me immediately. "Of course, you can change your reservation, and the rate will actually be less expensive since it's a Thursday instead of the weekend," they said. So, not only were we able to cancel and reschedule with Comfort Inn, but I also got a $22 credit to my card because of the lower rate on a Thursday! What a huge difference in the culture and attitude between the two hotels.
I had to talk to the GM of Westgate Best Western, who told me, "There are no refunds with less than a 48-hour notice." The desk person who answered the phone at Comfort Inn, on the other hand, was able to make the decision and help us with our mistake. I was irritated with Best Western because of this pompous GM, and I promptly got on the computer and canceled the remaining 17 nights we had booked at Best Westerns during our cross-country trip and rebooked with Comfort Inn.
Thinking about the inconsistencies in Best Western service over the past few years, it was the GM at Best Western Westgate Inn who finally made me pull out of the Best Western universe and go to the competing Comfort Inn. Best Western won't miss my 35-40 nights a year staying with them, but I hope others can be spared some aggravation by reading this review and seeking other accommodations that better serve the traveler.
Addenda: You can read the Mgr's response. He is a foreign character who has a short temper and less than a great comprehension of English. And apparently he has 'Super Powers' with his ability to decipher my on-screen name from Mr. Incredible. This incident with the Westgate Best Western happened 5 weeks ago, but the Mgr. is ready to "Proove" his side of the story with his records. Obviously he's using a standard line to respond to this review. And for that matter, take a look at the other reviews posted here -- all 5 star and of uniform length and highlighting different features. The other reviews all sound like the same person wrote them. Check out a website called Fakespot which assigns a score of "Highly Deceptive" to the glowing reviews he's posted for his hotel.
I'd like to save somebody else the issues I've had with this guy. I don't honestly think he's going to be in the hotel...
Read moreThe outside is nice, well kept, clean. Staff were professional, welcoming and courteous, willing to give you information on the area and directions. There is fast food and restaurants near by. Made sure you had everything you need for your stay and items you might need. Kept the breakfast area well stocked and cleaned up, wide variety of foods and juices, coffee milk and hot food as well. Other visitors at breakfast were pleasant and polite. Rooms and bathrooms are clean, comes with a microwave and small fridge, plenty of towels, wonderful showers and plenty of hot water, hair dryer, ironing board, and coffee pot worked, plenty of lighting, no problems with the TV. Hallways were carpeted and clean. Some might object to the residual smell of cleaning products, but I want that there, it was not overwhelming but pleasant and tells me they are doing their job with cleanliness. No smoking rooms or indoor pool, like the other Best Western we stayed in, but I just wanted to get to that comfortable bed, I have back problems and they are great beds there and they give you good blankets, not thin and you are comfortable. the heating unit was fine, not too hot or cold. I did not realize they lock the doors at 10 pm for the safety of the staff and guest at this hotel, (maybe just for York?) but it's good that they do that. This Best Western did not appear to be in a bad or rundown section of York, and I am not sure if this is the usual at Best Western's or just the town of York. I only give it 4 stars because of a incident that startled me, coming out of my room @ 9:50 pm someone was just sitting on the floor with a hoodie on, who did not even look up when I stepped out. Maybe trying to sneak a smoke, (non smoking hotel and a fine if you smoke in the room), or something else, I didn't know. And as I am a female and had two younger females with me, I made sure the door was locked and went down to the front desk and mentioned it to the female night clerk. She also seemed perplexed at this and immediately went to investigate. I admit being concerned for her. But she came back down soon and when I went back up there was no one in the hall. Now, this maybe just the area of York, I am not familiar with it, but that had never happened in any other hotel/motel I stayed in at York or anyone else, even in another chain in Texas or Florida, so it may just be the city of York or random incident, but it did cause alarm. I don't believe it was something that happens frequently at this hotel given what I observed at any other time during my stay, and staff investigated immediately. No other problems and went to sleep. It stayed quiet, even near the main road, until the wake up call came. Check out was easy. I will gladly stay at another Best Western, personally I don't care for York, it is more expensive for just about everything there. Groceries, gas, restaurants, (the Cheddars there is great) motels/hotels, traffic is crazy busy, downtown parking is hard to find and expensive. Most people are friendly, courteous, helpful. But I have also encountered rude and abrupt, or strictly business and get out of my way. I would just prefer to stay outside of York somewhere else and travel to do the business I have to do there. Maybe check out the...
