Phoenix Palace Hotel Hanoi is located at one of the main street in Hanoi Old Quarter. It is just around 10 minutes walk to Hoan Kiem Lake and 5 minutes walk to St John Cathedral. Nearby to this hotel are food stalls, restaurants, convenience store, pharmacy, and hospital. Compared to some other budget hotels which are located at the small lane, location wise Phoenix Place is located at a strategic place.
The hotel itself is an older hotel which have been renovated partly. Like the toilets and furniture are in classic style but still functions well. Do not expect too professional service from their staff. The receptionist could speak limited English. The housekeeping staff did not consistent in providing room amenities. I stayed here for 3 nights. On first day, they did not provide any tea and coffee as well as mineral water. They sent it after I checked in. The second day, they did not provide at all.
The room was rather simple. The bed was comfy. The blanket was thin but they provided thick one and extra pillow at the wardrobe. Safety box was provided. Mini fridge was not cool. In room WiFi was available and the speed was good. Minibar was provided with additional charges. Air conditioning was cool. Bathroom was equipped with bathtub. The bathtub and toilet bowl was old but functioning well. Soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb were provided. Hairdryer was also there. Water pressure was good. Hot and cold water shower was provided. Cleanliness needed to be improved. I found insect on the first night of stay.
The room came with breakfast daily. Breakfast was served from 7-10 am. Each guest could choose 1 main course from local, Asian or Western menu. There were also buffet for fruits, toast, tea and coffee, and some ready to eat food. Taste of the breakfast menu was good. The restaurant staff was...
Read more3 of 4 days I breakfasted here I saw terrible treatment of guests by the furious manager. First it was shooing a large table of Indians to a bus when they had just sat down. This is probably because a handful of hotels share just a handful of tables -- so he said their bus time had been moved up 20 minutes suddenly, and they would lose their seats to Sapa if they didn't forego breakfast. Rudely herding guests like cattle and not honoring scheduled departure times is an overbooking issue as well.
Next was his hissing "finished" when there was no milk, bread or fried rice the latter part of Sunday service. Not "sorry" in any way, and the fruit platters were often bare too.
Then there was scolding a guest for leaving sugar packets near coffee -- no trash containers are provided, requiring guests to transport them to their tables along with cups, plates, cutlery & whatever else they might be carrying.
Today he forced a South Asian visitor to accept torn, dirty & unusable bills as change, insisting repeatedly they were "fine! fine! fine!" -- this unpleasant exchange went on for minutes, but the guest left with useless notes.
The most outrageous rudeness was trying to grab a fruit plate I was clearly still eating from while hissing "Finished?" That's as direct an order to scram as I've ever received!
My affiated hotel was fine, but other reviews show this hotel repeatedly bullies South Asians and has the same complaints of rudeness over and over.
His impunity must come with ownership -- any sane management would have fired him. But the positive ratings are falsified to outnumber the persistent stories of poor service & worse. Beware the Phoenix hotel chain unless you want shamelessly rude employees -- can't even...
