Le cinéma à écran unique a ouvert ses portes en 1938, remplaçant une librairie. En 1956, un deuxième écran ouvre au sous-sol, remplaçant un théâtre cabaret. Appelé Actua-Champo, cet écran était dédié aux émissions d'information et possédait sa propre entrée. Une seule entrée a été installée à la fin des années 1970. Les projets de fermeture du Champo au début des années 2000 ont été annulés suite à l'opposition populaire. Le Champo était fréquenté par de célèbres cinéastes français des années 1960 et 1970. This theatre is not only a Parisian institution, it is also a Parisian tradition located in the 5th, in the midst of a half a dozen wonderful bookstores and coffee shops. I'm an American who loves mid-century movie theaters. I absolutely had to see a film here while staying in St Germaine. My father and I caught a screening of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and it was incredible. I felt so lucky to be able to sit down and catch a nighttime screening of a classic film in the middle of Paris.
