I had read reviews of this place on my first trip to Rome, but to my profound disappointment it was closed for the holiday. I came upon it with my sister quite by accident on my second trip, while trying to track down the Pantheon (we did find that afterwards!). The young woman who waited on us was incredibly patient as we decided which chocolates to put in our respective ballotins, and then I remembered that they had been rated very highly for their gelato. We bought that as well, and ate it on our nighttime wander toward the Pantheon. I have eaten my fair share of gelato in Rome and I can safely say, this was the best I have had! The chocolate selection is varied, with a vast number of flavor combinations of which I had not even conceived. It is my understanding that the selection changes frequently, so I could not make any recommendations. I only wish I had taken a picture of the case, because when I got my chocolates back to the States, I could not recall which flavor was which! Nevertheless, my husband thought they were the best chocolates he had ever tasted. I highly recommend a visit to this shop. The chocolate is definitely high-end, but worth the splurge, both of calories and cash! Or pop in for a very reasonably priced gelato, worth the stop. Side note: thanks again to the young couple who gave us their map so that we could find our way to...
Read moreWe were walking around Rome's central streets and noticed the Mexican name. Turns out the owner's parents opened and named the shop after a visit to Mexico but they don't actually use Mexican chocolate. Sourced from all the usual places according to the owner.
To put the stars into perspective, my wife and I like chocolate and eat fresh chocolates in many European countries as well as Japan. Overall we would give the chocolates here two stars at best. We got three types of truffles - mint, pistachio and lavender (their specialty). Both the mint and the pistachio are totally forgettable. The lavender has good balance and I may buy it again. We also bought draghees and they weren't good at all. And we also bought some caramel nuts which were decidedly stale. Their prices are also on the high side so this was quite disappointing.
Their saving grace is their gelato. We had pistachio and dark chocolate and they went together excellently. There's as lot of gelataria in Italy and we've eaten quite a bit of it and the ones...
Read moreMy dad rarely comments on chocolate but he loved what I brought him from here (on the store owner's recommendation). She was very sweet and talked to us cheerfully even though she didn't speak English and we don't speak Italian, and she did a great job of explaining the products to us as best as she could. It turns out she speaks French, though, so maybe that info will help any future French speaking visitors.
I tried the lavender and one other gelato flavor (it has almond and vanilla and coconut in it, I think, but I don't remember what it's called) and both were delicious. The lavender tastes like eating a flower and was easily the best gelato I had in Italy. Seriously, we had such a positive experience that we left smiling and spent the whole day talking about it. Between her and Essenzialmente Laura (a nearby perfumery), we had the most enjoyable time on our last full day in Rome. Very sweet,...
