I would like to say the food was good and I enjoyed my salad very much but unfortunately being bullied in any language isn’t fun. I am Canadian but this is my third trip to Italy so I took some lessons. I admit I probably said Grazie a lot to the waiters, but I am Canadian and we are polite. I honestly thought it was respectful to try speak Italian in Italy. When I overheard the waiter make fun of me in Italian for saying thankyou too much to the other waiters, in front of me and they all laughed loudly, it was hard not to feel something. I was embarrassed. When they realized my mood changed I think they all knew I knew. We all do things that maybe in retrospect cross the line of humanity but there was no accountability on their part. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else so I am saying something. Yes I was probably ridiculous and I wanted to ask for the bill in Italian but I didn’t dare after that. I never spoke another word in Italian to them. I will try to speak in Italian again and be who I am but it may take a day or so. My self esteem took a hit for the rest of the day and I cannot imagine them doing this to one of my friends or clients. I would like this to be a learning to all of us that bullying in any language isn’t okay. Once everyone laughed with him then they all participated. No one stood up to him. Now I am sure their intent was not to bully me but when I started tearing up at the table that should have been a clue that it...
Read moreWe saw the sign outside of the restaurant for $15 apertivo - drink + charcuterie - from 4-7pm. It was a little after 4pm so we thought - perfect timing!. We planned to eat a late dinner so apertivo was what we wanted. I was very clear upon entering the restaurant that we were there for apertivo. We were seated and thought all was well. Waiter arrived with 2 menus and started telling us the daily lobster special. We clarified that we were there for apertivo and he said ‘you can’t have that now because it’s dinner service’. I said…you have a huge sign outside that says apertivo 4-7. Then he says…oh, I didn’t realize what time it was. Ok…fair enough. Weird, but it can happen I suppose. He waits a while then returns for the drink order. Then we wait almost an hour before having to ask for the food that goes with the apertivo (my drink is long gone at this point). Same waiter then says…you have to pay extra for food. My husband says…that’s not what your sign says. The waiter actually makes my husband go outside to look at the sign….which says exactly what we read before coming in. Waiter says ‘you should have told me you wanted food when you got here’. Wow. No words. We eventually got the food, ate and left. We have had nothing but positive experiences dining in Italy for the last week. This one was very odd and we were made to feel very...
