Tendon Tenya — Restaurant in Tokyo

The vending machine is multilingual and does not accept large bills (I kept trying to insert a 5000 yen bill and a 10000 yen bill.). When I went in, I was told to sit wherever I wanted. I found out that no matter whether dining in or ordering to go, you sit at a table or seat. Your meal ticket is taken when your meal is served or bagged. It seemed everyone was told what to do. I guess all of us were first timers at this restaurant! Anyway, the food was hot and delicious. There was a hot/cold drink (tea, water) dispensing machine. After you finish your meal, you take your tray up to the counter. Oh, my meal was served to me. I think that's because I ordered in English. If you order in Japanese, you go up to the counter and take your tray (or takeout) when your ticket number shows up on...

I absolutely love the Tendon Tenya chain of restaurants and I have to visit once every time I'm in Japan. This location in an office complex and was great. At the entrance they had a vending machine to order with a tab for "English" menu. Great photos and descriptions of what's available. The only mistake I made was in waiting for them to serve my food to my table. They had called my order number and I didn't realize this location was operating a little different. I finally walked up to the counter to inquire, and they handed me my tray. Cold soba was tasty and perfectly prepared. The tempura donburi was excellent, as always. Tenya Tendon has been my favorite local tempura restaurant since I first came to Japan 18 years ago. When covid came, we weren't able to go to japan until this year.... the first thing we did is to eat there (in shinjuku). We were surprised to see how much it has changed. Everything has become self service. The food has shrunk, Ebi is smaller, veggies did not look fresh, actually it looked dried... even the tsukemono was bland. The tea didn't taste strong and what's bad, it's more expensive than before. Seems they are cutting back with the quality/ingredients and made it expensive. So sad to see how Tenya Tendon has lost...
