Unbelievable. Truly one of the more bizarre experiences of my life.
At the produce section I enquired as to whether they had any Chinese garlic (the cheap, half dozen whole cloves in the little mesh bags - as opposed to the tastier but expensive NZ stuff).
The guy stacking produce didn't know so called over his manager.
"Why would you want that Chinese rubbish?!" he asked. I was taken aback.
"What do you mean?"
"You don't want to eat that poison!" he exclaimed. "You'll end up growing an extra arm or something."
I was in disbelief.
I asked why they didn't stock it. He said they had some out the back, but they wouldn't put it on the shelves. I was even more confused.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because we don't believe our customers want to buy that rubbish." he replied.
"But I am a customer!"
I asked why they stocked the peeled, plastic-shrink-wrapped garlic (also from China) and not the whole cloves? "Doesn't that come from the same place?" I asked.
This is when it started to get even weirder. "Hey man, I know you're a ring-in. We just don't believe our customers want it."
"A ring-in?!"
"From the competition."
I just stared at him.
At this point I gave up. I had no idea what was going on. Apparently he thought I was somebody I wasn't.
Either way, the product I wanted wasn't there - or it was, but he wouldn't sell it to me - and I had been treated like an idiot for asking for it.

Read moreWas a good shopping experience until the checkout process. We were just scanning our items when we asked for the loyalty program as we forgot our loyalty card. The lady came over and immediately started saying the avocados didn’t come up even though we just scanned it and it did come up. She made us scan it again charging us for 4 avocados in the process. She was very rude and then walked off. Then after paying and collecting our receipt we noticed we were charged for 4 instead of 2 as we suspected. Then she told us to go to customer service and then started telling the customer support lady that we scanned them twice when she came over and rudely made us scan them again. Overall very disappointed with this service and would like to see something done about it. Shop with your hard earned money...
