Well it'll never be as silent as the grave here 😅 located next to the highway it's loud. At night it's not clearly marked and we took a shortcut through the "park" not seeing what it was till the next day 😱 there were no gates, it's a casual corner park... . It's beautiful and feels like home. A old neglected cemetary. The VIP spot belongs to William Hobson, the first Governor of New Zealand (died 1842). Named after William Cornwallis Symonds (died 1841, aged 31 in a boating accident), army captain and magistrate. . Symonds Street Cemetery, the first official cemetery in Auckland (1842) and resting place of Auckland City's founding fathers. They closed for burials in 1886 (+1 families welcome, the newest/redone headstone we saw was 1919) in 1960s - land reduced by about a quarter for the highway (it's noisy here, defs not resting in peace anymore). . 💀We stayed at a hotel opposite a graveyard, set as park, no gates closing at sundown. Though they said it's the kids doing drugs in there that you gotta worry about. As it's on a hill you can't go in at night (shouldn't) there aren't many paved roads and if you slipped and fell you might end up on top of someone! . The first graveyard on a hill, once a place of peace it's now next to a motorway... (might be the secret to being on time?) so beautiful though. Need to do a tour next time. So many graves needs upkeeping. . 📍Symonds Street Cemetery //...

The cemetery has a large open entrance on the corner of K Rd and Symonds Street. There are also a few other smaller pathways along the other roads which surround it. There are multiple pathways which go throughout the cemetery. It isn't packed with gravestones so it almost feels like a park. There are multiple sections of the cemetery for different denominations such as Jewish or Catholic. It does spread across the road from Symond Street under Grafton Bridge, and those areas feel more like a proper cemetery with lots...

The graves have been knocked over, broken and uncared for. There is garbage everywhere! We went to find a grave on a family member and couldn't find it because of how unclean and dirty this place was. There was mold growing over the headstones, headstones that are missing, and beer cans dumped over them. The council really needs to step it up and clean it up. I am completely disappointed and upset that we looked for 2 hours only to not being able to...

A very nice old cemetery, and provides a tranquil place amid the hustle & bustle of city life. Have a nice sculpture and benches on the Karangahape Rd (K'Rd) side of the cemetery - next to the Jewish section of the cemetery. There's also a nice pathway that connects Symonds St and Upper Queen St. However, I won't use it at night as well as on rainy days as the pathway can be quite slippery.

Another Auckland highlight. I always leave a cemetery, feeling mixed emotions. I find them fascinating, but also I wish that I could spend more time there. I barely had time to really pay my respect and very sad to leave. To see how nature reclaims and how easy we lose our past, go visit this wonder. I'm envious of the Auckland locals that can return and truly appreciate this treasure.
