On my last evening in Lisbon I wanted a very quick dinner and while walking from Praça do Comércio to my hotel I came by this A Padaria Portuguesa.
If you haven't been to one of these, they are a bakery & pastry shop chain, but they will sell you sandwiches and a bowl of soup, just like a cup of coffee. In a way they are the "Portuguese Starbucks", just better, because they focus on the bakery & pastry shop concept and they do it well.
Back to the review: I wanted a quick dinner and I didn't want much. After asking they offered me a delicious bowl of soup for €1.60. All the other prices I saw were super reasonable, but a bowl of soup (and it wasn't a tiny cup, but a proper bowl) at that price is a steal.
When you come in remember to take a number. Use the dispenser marked #1 for eating in and #2 for take away. I ended up with a most delightful lady, who tolerated my terrible mixture of Spanish & Portuguese and then helpfully offered to do the rest of the transaction in perfect English.
I'd recommend coming back, the atmosphere of these shops is very pleasant, lighter and more cheerful than your average Starbucks and I would rate the quality of food and...
Read moreBe aware of this dodgy place! The staff tried to scam me. I initially tried to order a flat white from the self-service machine, and it was priced at €1.70. But at the final step, it asked for a tax ID number, which I don’t have as a tourist, so I had to go to the counter.
When I ordered the exact same drink from the staff, they charged me €4. They didn’t even give me a receipt until I requested for it. And then I noticed the price difference. When I questioned them, they made up an excuse saying they gave me a bigger cup, which I never asked for. (And that was bullshit as everyone was having the same size of drinks on their table.)Then they tried to blame me for not requesting a smaller size. What a joke!
After I called them out, they refunded me the difference in cash. Be careful!
P.S. the flat white tastes terrible too....
Read moreThis morning I arrived in Lisbon and the only address I knew was Padaria Portuguesa de Marques Pombal. When I arrived 03/06/2025 at 7:00 there were two young women. When I entered, some people walked past them and were kind and smiling. Once it was my turn, they changed their faces (I am a woman who wears a hijab). When it came to paying, they refused to let me pay in cash, knowing that it was not my first time. I have already paid in cash at their place and in Padaria del Amoreiras. I am disappointed with their bad behavior, racism, and even worse, the filth of the place, no soap to wash your hands. I sincerely do not recommend this experience in this...
