Such a beautiful church. The exterior walls have very interesting shape, almost a lozenge which gives the exterior a unique texture. On entering you may encounter beggars collecting money near the door. It is not compulsory to contribute. It is a nice thing to do. The interior is beautifully proportioned and not overly decorated. La chiesa di Nostra Signora di Betlemme è una chiesa parrocchiale cattolica in stile barocco situata all'incrocio tra La Rambla e Calle del Carmen , a Barcellona ( quartiere Ciutat Vella ). La chiesa originaria faceva parte del Colegio de Nuestra Señora de Belén, la prima scuola di istruzione superiore gestita dai gesuiti , fondata nel 1544 da María Manrique de Lara. La chiesa fu costruita nel 1553, anche se nel 1671 subì un incendio che rese necessaria una nuova costruzione. Progettato da Josep Juli e diretto dai gesuiti padre Francisco Tort (architetto) e Pau Diego de Lacarre (scultore), fu costruito tra il 1680 e il 1729, anche se la sua decorazione interna durò fino al 1855. Dopo l' espulsione dei gesuiti dalla Spagna nel Nel 1767 la chiesa divenne parrocchia della diocesi . Nel 1936 fu incendiato durante la Guerra Civile Spagnola , quando andò perduta la sontuosa decorazione barocca dell'interno.
