As a local, I grew up coming to Petritxol street to eat hot chocolate and churros with my family when I was a child. And I must say that we used to go to the competition at the end of the street... But then I grew up, and I thought that giving tours and sometimes I wouldn't be able to get a table what I used to go with my family, so I started entering La Pallaresa instead. And I discovered that they had given better hot chocolate! So I'm not going to wear my family used to take me anymore.
Hot chocolate is really thick here: you want be able to drink it, you have to eat it with a spoon. Or even better, dip some churros on it! and for an extra seat experience, order a "suís" instead (pronounced as "Swiss"): then your hotel that will come topped with whipped cream. Very messy to eat, but so much fun!
And if you thing you want be able to finish up a whole latte-sized , then order a small hot chocolate: It's the size of an expresso cup and in my experience that's as much as most non-Spanish people can eat!
Weekday mornings are the best time to come: in the afternoon and during the weekends it is packed and you will have to wait in line outside to get a table. No fun!
Another great thing about this place is they don't only specializing hot chocolate: the also have lots of other Catalan desserts you need to try. Crema Catalana (Catalan creme brulee) and mel i mató (Catalan cottage cheese with honey) I think you can try someone else, to go for something more unique instead. Try the Mato de Pedralbes (really rich dessert somewhere between ricotta and flan), Arròs amb Llet (rice pudding) or Menjar Blanc (almond creme). They are so good you won't be able to choose what's...
Read moreNo idea what the fuss is about. The churros are OK. Nothing special. Churros need sugar and plenty of it to make them taste good and yet they were close to sugarless with perhaps extra sugar possible in small packets? One appeared on our table but not sure how. Each table needs a sugar pot !! The hot chocolate dip didn't have much flavour and if a waiter could get an order more wrong, I'd be extremely surprised. A hot chocolate with whipped cream....which we pointed to clearly on the menu, appeared as a plate of cream. The Filipino waiter looked out of his depth and losing control of the packed place. With every inch occupied by tables and chairs with barely room to move, the poor man didn't know if he was coming or going and rather than stress him out more, we let it be. Somehow, this place has been over hyped and under delivers. There are easily better places but if you enjoy mediocre churros in an extremely overly packed place full of tourists, then this is for you. If a "local" recommends this place it must be to avoid you going to where they really go and turning their place into a...
Read moreAs we walked through and around La Rambla, the #1 tourist destination in Barcelona, we noticed the short Q outside a store in the very warm n nice evening. Little did we know this is the most wanted (secret) Place among the locals as well as the tourists. After checking our City Guides (yes we got some!) we decided to nail this spot for our Breakfast Gateaway on our last day in Barcelona- sacrificing the Classy (n pricey) Breakfast at 'W'!
It was not even 10 am in the morning, the Store was packed but we got 2 spots to choose in that tiny little but clean and tidy place. Our Big Eye, lots bigger than our Tummies!, forced us to order way too much but No Regrets at all.
All Yummy and Mighty Tasty. Staffs are very handy and friendly eventhough with poor english. Price is more than acceptable, so you should push your luck a bit by choosing the menu :P
Shortly, this place holds a 'MUST'...
