Great experience with Moui! A VERY generous and wide variety of food - Burmese, Northern Thai, and Central Thai food. DO NOT eat before this tour- you will try multiple dishes at at least 3 out of 6 stops (around 4 hrs depending on size of the group). Visited in October - a great visit window, less crowded, less rushed to visit venues and sample the food.
Moui shared lots of dish and local cultural history with us, and guess what - it is not a walking tour! You ride in the tuktuk from point to point, with most walking in one of the night markets.
If you're staying a day or two after, don't hesitate to buy some fruit to take to your hotel or airbnb at the market visit! Those rambutan and mangosteen need a home in your belly and are so reasonably priced!
Per the site, this is a heavy meat tour (mostly pork, some chicken) and due to the variety each time every trip will be different. On ours there was a delicious Burmese vegetarian restaurant.
And don't be scared of the bugs - fully cooked and they taste just like meat ;) - chew fast to bypass the texture!
Be sure to take a picture and catalog each stop on your favorite map app as they do not provide cards or a list of each business and many don't have websites and may not have Romanicized names (signs all in Thai). Some of the stops are very famous from social media, or local fame, but all the food is great, comes with chili and garlic for you to ramp up the spice, and you are offered water bottles throughout the tour, with antibac wipes and spray! Locals are super kind with your warm greeting and thank yous.
Moui was super sweet and even offered to book a Grab ride for us when we struggled with the Bolt app, and carry our food leftovers at points along the way - she's a cool lady! Be sure to tip her ;).
Last tip: arrive at the meetup venue 30-45 min early to take pics, tour the temple grounds a little and use...
Read moreGreat experience with Tree. He was friendly, energetic, and incredibly knowledgeable about the cuisine of northern Thailand. I wouldn't hesitate to book this tour if you want to immerse yourself in the flavors of Chiang Mai. Lots and lots of food, so pace yourself (if you can). Some of the spots (like the earthen pot roast pork) ended up being return trips. Plenty of stops I would not have found otherwise.
The reason for not giving it 5 stars is the pace of the tour. The first couple of stops felt rushed and I barely even got to finish what was on my plate before being rushed away to the next stop. But then the tour unnecessarily lulled and dragged at the market portion of the tour (our second to last stop), where we wandered around for half an hour, picking up various things and hauled heavy bags around the market while the vendors were closing down for the day. It seemed like it took way too long, and two people in the tour bounced at that point and everyone was tired. Like watching the director's cut of a great movie and it just feels too drawn out. After the market stop was another dinner stop for more noodles when it seemed like the momentum of the tour was lost.
What I think would be better is doing the Burmese noodles first, then finishing with a simple dessert of some kind for the sake of pacing. And maybe do a quick market stop towards the beginning of the tour, as the fruits would have made for a nice appetizer. Just some suggestions, but overall a great evening of eating and...
Read moreWe had a great tour last Monday with Moui. It were just my husband and myself, so we had all the opportunity to ask Moui what we wanted about food, the people, the country. She was very attentive, open and interested.
She has an excellent knowledge of the history of Thailand and especially Chiang Mai, how the traditional dishes are being prepared and the separate ingredients. That was a huge difference from other food tours we did in the past. You can tell that she knows her way in the kitchen. We learnt so much about Thai food and culture. Moui's English is also very good, so we talked for almost 4 hours.
She let us taste everything, but was very respectful when we occasionally tasted food that was not exactly within our liking. She also gave us enough time for ourselves to enjoy the food and talk to each other about it.
Moui is absolutely a great tour guide, chef, host and an ambassador...
