EDIT: The response to this is honestly phenomenal. I did not call him a dick, and to suggest that I did is a pretty interesting way of twisting the story. If he'd actually read the review he'd have seen that actually I was being as sympathetic as I could be. I feel like this response to what is honestly legitimate criticism pretty much says everything it needs to about what the company is.
This is a difficult one to write. It's also a long one...sorry.
Before I go any further, I want to clarify that this is my own personal experience - from the glowing reviews here and the many happy customers in the shop it's very clear that my experience is not that of the majority, and I understand the circumstances were quite specific here. I am a firm believer in differentiating impact from intent, and I am confident that the intent here was not negative. Having said that, the impact was, which is why I feel the need to write this.
I want to state first of all that I am not a scalper, reseller or anything of the sort; I'm a man in his 30s having an early midlife crisis, taking the form of buying Pokémon cards. It's always been about the sentiment; I buy the cards I like, not the ones that are worth the most.
I came into the shop, enjoyed having a walk back down memory lane, and spotted a box set of a Pokémon I like. It had a price clearly displayed on it, which I thought was a reasonable one, and asked to buy it.
After a few minutes of the man looking at it, he then tells me he needs to look up the price. I said that the price was on there, at which point he tells me it's the wrong price.
I completely understand that mistakes happen, and I had no massive attachment to buying it - but the exchange that took place left me feeling pretty rubbish, if I'm honest. I was made to feel like I was being completely unreasonable for having asked to buy it at the price it was displayed at, as if I was somehow trying to rip the business off.
As I say, I completely get that mistakes happen - I work in a retail IT industry and I see the impact of this regularly! - but to be made to feel like I was a. Being unreasonable and b. In some way trying to take advantage felt pretty awful.
I said I'd leave it, and went to leave at which point he offered it to me for the price it was advertised at. As I say above, it was never about the price - I ended up going onto Amazon and buying a very similar but not identical box set featuring the same Pokémon for a couple of pound cheaper. At that point I felt like I'd been embarrassed enough and just needed to leave.
As I said at the beginning of this, I'm very aware that this is not most people's experience, and it's great to see so many people having really positive ones. It's just that this particular, weirdly specific circumstance and the way it was handled left a really bitter taste...
Read moreMade a somewhat impulse purchase of a 360 game I needed for my collection the other week. Looking around the shop you might be fooled into believing that the games are in excellent condition as they put a lot of effort into wrapping each game up and individually stickering each item. A fair disclaimer these are still second hand games and wear and tear is expected for older console generations.
At the time £40 seemed about right for item I chose (or so I had thought) at one point in time the game could be found in the high street competitor for around that price. There was a £30 label also on the box and so after asking the member of staff he confirmed the price was £40 I wasn't too put off at this point so I continued with my purchase. As I walked away from the store I opened the cellophane up and the condition was below expectations, which left me feeling a little disheartened. I had a sinking feeling that I had overpayed for this game and so I decided to look it up on the high street competitors app. To find the game was only £12 in store. Admittedly this isn't an easy game to find and condition is always going be a factor for myself as I'm a collector.
As cool as the store is I'm never a massive fan of the cellophane covers as they prevent you from making an informed purchase not only that but to be nearly 4X higher than your competitors leaves me feeling a little bit let down. Especially after doing a quick search on vinted to find a copy of this game for £16 clearly displaying better quality than one I purchased.
Maybe I should have done my due diligence and checked the price more thoroughly before making the purchase. But pretty much every game I came across was higher than other stores.
It pains me to give an independent store such a bad review as I always try to support local business where I can but with my first experience being that of regret, it's hard to recommend this store to a friend other than for...
Read moreIf you're a fan of classic gaming Pokemon cards, retro collectibles or little Japanese blind boxes, Super Game Shack is the best and the coolest by far I have ever visited. There is so much to choose from and its an immaculate example of a shop, everything is clean and well laid out unlike other places I have visited, it is bright and welcoming and we always end up finding something (or many things) we want, theres always something new and exciting every time we visit. We have shopped here for a few years now and enjoy supporting a local business and finding lots of treasures!
By far the thing that sets Super Game Shack above the rest for me is the staff! Unlike other places we have visited, we ALWAYS feel welcome and valued here (Nick, Rich, Dan & Jim are our regular faces and they’re all awesome!), its is a necessity to pop by every time we are in town. Everyone is chatty and friendly and we always leave with a smile 😊 Visited this weekend to puck up a little haul of Pokemon cards for the little one and he was absolutely spoilt for choice!
