Cool experience and the employees do a good job and really care about your experience too. It seemed rushed with inefficiencies just getting into the build area took almost 20 minutes over start time but they want you showing up 10 minutes early still. I get that there is likely a lot of set up to do but with the good employees there, if it takes that long to reset then it may be worth streamlining their jobs to push people through quicker without rushing the experience for both employees and customers.
I would have given 5 star regardless, patience is important in Disneyland and waiting is just how it is and the employees were great. However after building my Saber and checking out what's available at Doc-Onder's Den next door, the pre-built Sabers quality is bar none way, waaaay better. I bought the new Qui-Gonn saber and was blown away at how much better it is than my custom one. Not even a comparison. Obviously you could expect this but.. My custom Saber, each sleeve rocks back and fourth and unscrews from each other while assembled very easily. Waving it around a few times and the panels don't stay lined up well. The inner part of the saber.. Is plastic.. and the saber uses 4xAA batteries then the sleeves are solid metal but they thread into plastic and each other terribly. My brothers is a bit better but imo, still not good enough. I assembled mine correctly and didn't cross thread any parts at all. This is NOT going to be a one time build problem either. These are design flaws and cheaping out where they shouldn't have cheaped out and should've just have charged customers more for better quality. I've worked in a machine shop and bad design is bad design, and bad tolerances are bad tolerances. The play these things have is ridiculous. The plastic inners could have been left larger to take up slop or heck the threads on the sleeves could have been threaded more than one thread. These are going to wear out incredibly fast if used at all.
The pre-built Sabers cost much less and are absolutely rock solid and have a rechargeable battery with charge port built right in. Sure you can add about 50$ for the blade with these cause it's not included but I digress. The pre-built also comes with a sweet box for the saber too.
If I would have seen the custom Saber in person first I wouldn't have gone with one.. The experience was awesome it's just a bit absurd that they charge so much for the experience for a completely inferior end product after paying more and waiting for the experience vs just buying a saber.
If you are interested in going, Go for the experience & customization, not the Saber itself!!!!!! Experience was great and worthwhile on its own. Saber still looks good too.
In that mindset it may be worth it as long as you know what your...
Read moreI am writing this review about my familys personal experience at Savi's Workshop. For those of you who do not know, Savi's Workshop is a shop located inside of one of the newer lands in Disneyland, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge where you can participate in an immersive experience of building your own custom lightsaber. My husband and I are avid Star Wars fans, so this is the perfect experience for us.
This experience required a reservation in advance which can be done in the Disneyland Mobile App or on their website. We made our reservation 30 days in advance. On the day of our reservation at Savi's Workshop, we needed to ensure that we had a valid ticket to Disneyland Park, in addition to a reservation for Disneyland Park for the same date. The day has come. As we walked through Disneyland and into Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, we entered the planet Batuu West. Upon arrival at Savi's Workshop, we were greeted by a Cast Member at the check-in point. Here we confirmed our reservation, paid for our experience, and selected a pin which represents one of the four themes that lightsabers are based on. The theme/ pin selection preselects options for your custom lightsaber, and we were asked to wear it throughout our experience. This made us part of the story. Once it was time for our reservation, my husband and I were invited inside of the workshop where about 20 people gather around a U-shaped counter that was sectioned off for each participant to have our own station to build at. The Cast Members are called "Gatherers" in this experience, and they first presented us with the selection of our Kyber Crystal, this is like the heart of the lightsaber and gives it its color. We are given four choices of color, I chose violet, and my husband chose red. We were then given a tray of parts and chose what we wanted and assembled our lightsaber handles. The Gatherers are close by and available for questions throughout. After assembling the handle, you place the Kyber Crystal inside and the Gatherers come around to prepare your handle to be united with its blade. The Gatherers then lead a ceremony where we all light up our lightsabers for the first time as a group. This literally gave me goosebumps. It really was a special experience for my husband and I to share together. I was five months pregnant at the time and we decided right then and there that we would take our daughter to participate in this experience someday.
We would highly recommend this for Star Wars fans. The experience was pricey, but...
Read more“Dad, I want to build my own lightsaber! We can do that in Disney. Let’s do that please. It’s kinda expensive. But we get to build our own lightsaber!”
So, there’s my second reason for this particular visit to Disneyland. My young son has grown to become quite the Star Wars fan (in his own rather cute way; obsessed with the light, obsessed with being good). I spoke nothing of this as I didn’t want to risk disappointing him IF anything were to happen as he really locks onto (and keeps) promises like it were a binding legal document. Not to mention, knowing how he gets, we would not have enjoyed anything else in the park until the “mission” is complete.
(Though an appointment was recommended, someone had advised me that it wasn’t necessary on weekdays as there were multiple openings throughout the day if you were willing to be flexible.)
We made our way around most of the theme park as we had done in the past before heading towards the Star Wars area. It really amused me watching his attitude slowly shift as we got closer. His eyes eventually lit up as he turned to me and said, “DAD, I know a place here where we can build a lightsaber!”
Long story short, he asked every person in uniform or anyone peddling lightsabers where this workshop was. Everyone in true Disney form gave him all the attention he could hope for and directed him closer and closer to the workshop. Once there, he started conversing with the staff using theme lingo that made me feel quite old and outdated. All I had to do then at the right moment was pass them my card and wait in line with him.
It was an interesting experience - short but sweet. Watching my young one being this excited, happy, and carefree…is easily worth any dollar and effort. It was a really short workshop but it allowed fans to geek out quite a bit (as could also be observed with the other adults in there with us)…and that just adds to the overall magic that Disney already offers.
Build your own lightsaber - check. Feel like you’re part of the resistance - check. Harness the force and become a Jedi - check. Walk out like a boss -...
