The greatest thing about the Matterhorn Bobsleds is that the whole experience is written in the term, "classic". To start it all, Disneyland's Matterhorn is the first steel tubular rollercoaster in the world. It has a story to tell from the moment you ascend into the dark caves, to swerving around caverns and waterfalls before splashing in an alpine pond finale. It is hyperactively iconic throughout the Disney Park franchise and is extremely recognized for the Abominable Snowmen that reside in the icy mountain and the popular bobsled cars that zoom through an adventurous journey. Overall, it just stands out as a DIsneyland favorite and it deserves that title. Since the time it opened in 1959, it's been gathering visitors constantly through a Disney day basis and it hasn't changed a bit. Honestly, I can see how people enjoy other thrilling attractions a lot more such as Space Mountain. Space Mountain has it's own story to tell, it's a smoother ride, and special effects & music. However, when I ride Space Mountain, I feel fulfilled by just riding it once and that's enough for me. I don't have the need to ride it again. With the Matterhorn on the other hand, I am not holding back to ride it multiple times. Recently in late August, I rode the Matterhorn Bobsleds 21 times and I still wanted to ride it more. Matterhorn is just that special and a one-of-a-kind attraction that hasn't left since the first time I rode it and it won't leave. Despite a lot of people mentioning the ride is jerky or rough, I have to argue and say for a timeless ride who still stands past 60 years and holds it's magical atmosphere at bay, it's the best. Plus, many people who complain about the Matterhorn "killing" them or so, tend to over exaggerate. It's...

EXPERIENCE: Rising on the border of Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, the glistening, faux snow-covered mountain is modeled after the famous peak of the Alps. The coaster features dual tracks, one being a little over 100 feet longer than the other.
The first and only lift hill of the ride takes you up through a dark cave, complete with howling wind and monster noises and a cool, life-sized moving image of the abominable snowman giving chase from behind an ice shield (added recently).
Top speed is just 27 mph, but the peripheral effects of riding through ice-covered caverns, caves and tunnels, along with cutouts with views of the outdoors makes it feel like you're going a little faster. A combination of small drops, hills and banks ups the fun factor, but it's far from thrilling. Look for the resident abominable snowman (now animatronic) along the way. The finale is a splash through a small pond that actually aids the coaster's brakes with cooling and stopping, and is not a people-soaker.
FUN FACT: The ride is perched on excavated dirt from Cinderella's Castle. Prior to the coaster being built, the "hill" was promoted as a picnic spot but also turned into a "lovers lane" site at night, LOL. So un-Disney-like!
OVERALL: An exclusive classic that'll...
Read moreThe last time I had visited Disneyland this ride was closed and I was so disappointed at not getting the opporunity to ride it. This time it was open and I made sure to ride it twice-once for now and once for all those years ago.
Lightning lane is the way to go to not have to overly wait for this ride. Set up like a Swiss bobsled with 3 seats per car you really have to rush to get all your gear secure so that you are ready to take off into your adventure.
The ride starts off in the dark as you are climbing the lift hill and beyond. So, for a while was wondering if there would be any light. Then like a wild mouse type of ride it makes rugged twists and turns and drops that have you screaming for fun!! Inside you will hear growls of the abominable snowman as you whiz by him. The ride goes inside and out and of course my favorite was when our car pushed through the splashdown pool of water near the end. Didn't even get wet for that one. Still it was so fun.
Please be aware of the fact that if you have any sort of mobility issues then it is not recommended you ride this attraction. It is noted on a sign.
It always has and always will be one of my favorite attractions...
