The family and I were visiting Big Bear and I was looking for something fun for the whole family. I was reading a parent blog and this came up before we went on vacation. I never had thought about rock crawling in a Jeep but thought it would be good during COVID since only my family and I would be in a Jeep. I went to their website read about the different packages. Went to YouTube and watched a couple videos. It looked fun and family friendly. They teach you how to maneuver over the rock obstacles. They suggest "the squeeze" for families with toddlers. There was a package for a little less and it was only an hour tour. The Squeeze was still for beginners but you got to go to an area (the Squeeze) with bigger rocks that you had to manage to crawl. I booked it online picked my date and time. Day of I was pretty excited. First thing you check in sign a waiver. The guide (mine was Blake, he's really good, more about that later) goes over some rules & safety items as well as liability in case of an accident. You know the boring stuff that they have to do. Then after all parties have been checked in you go down to the Jeeps. Blake assigned a Jeep to everyone, my family's was Red. Since I have toddler Blake helped me install the car seat. The Jeeps have no doors, sometimes no roof depending on weather, there were thunderstorms the 2 previous days so it was on. The weather for our tour was great around low 80s. Really great since back at home were triple digit temperatures. After going over some things we need to know for rock crawling in the jeep (switching transmission to 4WD Lo) you head out caravan style. Each Jeep has a CB radio that you hear info, directions and history throughout the tour. You drive about 10 minutes on the roads to get to the off roading area. When I first got on this dirt road I thought it was bumpy and crazy. But we were still in 2WD. After about 20 minutes of driving on dirt roads learning about the history of Big Bear and the Gold Rush days you get to the point where you switch to 4WD. Then the fun really begins. Blake shows you what to do while telling you on the CB what you should be doing with throttle and steering. The first rock is a warm up but if you've never done it like me it looked crazy. You can't drive a normal vehicle over that rock without something bad happening to the vehicle. After Blake finished, he walks back to help you complete the challenge. He is awesome, very positive and keeps you calm and confident with his commands. There are about a half dozen challenges you're going to conquer. There is one break where you can take some shots of the scenery. Blake will take some for your Christmas cards. My kids really enjoyed it. My older son had fun climbing some of the rocks while we were on break. My little guy kept calling the Jeeps monster trucks and got a kick out of going over the rocks. By the time we switched back to 2WD on the dirt road it felt like a breeze since I had just finished the hard stuff. It was a little sad after putting the Jeep back into 2WD because you knew it was almost over. But I truly enjoyed myself and after completing the Squeeze you're qualified to drive an intermediate tour. I look forward to trying that next time. This was such fun and I never would have tried but it seemed fun and safer during COVID times. Since each group iis in their own Jeeps. I give high marks to the...
Read moreBig Bear Off-Road Experience: A Memory for a Lifetime! We took our son to Big Bear Off-Road Experience for his 13th birthday, along with his three sisters and two friends, and let me just say—we had a blast and a half! From start to finish, the kids were absolutely thrilled.
We sang our hearts out, added in some sound effects, and truly made the most of every moment.Bob, our guide, was fantastic—he didn't just explain the terrain but made sure the kids were fully engaged with the experience, which was wonderful.
Our youngest bear was just two years old, and our oldest was 14, and everyone had an amazing time. We brought booster seats for the little ones, which worked perfectly, even though only lap belts are available.
We packed peanut butter sandwiches, Cheetos, different types of chips, and plenty of water for the ride, making it a fun picnic on wheels. With multiple stops along the way, we were able to capture some perfect Instagram moments. The kids smiled the whole time, and my husband and I managed to sneak in some great couple pics too!
If I could give this place 10,000 stars, I would. It's perfect for couples, families, and groups alike. We were a group of nine, but the Zilla can hold up to 12, so there's plenty of room for fun.
Definitely bring a sweatshirt if you're visiting in late summer, fall, or winter—it gets chilly at that high elevation, but it's all part of the adventure!Oh, and the cherry on top?
The village was buzzing with tourists who cheered us on as we blasted music. People on the sidewalks were even dancing with us—it was just that kind of experience. Truly worth every dollar. If you're looking for a memory that will last a lifetime, go do it!
Thank you so Bob! You are...
Read moreWhat an amazing experience!! My family was visiting us in Big Bear from the Bay Area and I wanted to show them something awesome. Enter TOURZILLA!! We got what we expected and so much more. I've lived here full-time for 22 years and have explored the mountains extensively but little did I know our cool tour guide, Desi was about to school me proper by showing me places and telling history of the area that was new to me. We even met some folks from Taiwan who were hiking the PCT trail to Canada who we picked up to give a ride (there was space in the tour and they only had a few miles to go to the trailhead). The roads were bumpy but Tourzilla handled everything so well, very smooth ride but also super exciting, especially in the way back seats...woohoo!
The snowstorm from the day before provided the perfect backdrop for us to explore Holcomb Valley and learn about so much gold mining history. We drove thru fresh snow, deep snow & so much water, the puddles must have been 3 or 4 feet and the truck drove thru em like it was nothing. Oh, and there is a great soundtrack that the tour guide customizes for each tour. We were definitely sining along!
I would very much like to do this again in the summer to see the trees with all their leaves and smell the forest as the sun warms up the trees; always reminds me of summer camp, good times! I would recommend this experience to pretty much anyone, we had an 8 and 10 year old with us and they were beyond happy. The...
