I joined the Jae Hun Kim Taekwon-do Institute's Boston location approximately six months ago, entering as a novice with no prior experience in taekwondo or any martial arts. Despite not being in the younger age demographic, I was nervous about starting this journey, especially uncertain of my capabilities. However, I can confidently say that this decision has proven to be one of the most rewarding of my life.

I have had the privilege and honor of being taught by Master Kim and received unparalleled instructions from him. I am always amazed by Master Kim's remarkable ability to recall every student's name and closely monitor individual progress, always giving a sense of personalized attention, even amidst a diverse class of varying belt levels. Throughout the past six months, I have felt nurtured, mentored, motivated, and have learned five forms and many taekwondo skills under Master Kim's guidance. Not to mention getting a great workout!

But this is not all. Here are other reasons why this school stands out: The school accommodates flexible class schedules for both students and professionals with a class timetable designed to suit diverse schedules. The school fosters a friendly and uplifting culture, where every member feels part of a supportive family. Both my peers and Master Kim consistently inspire me to strive for excellence and continual improvement. The school offers sparring classes. When Charlotte and I joined the school 3 years ago, I wanted Taekwondo to help her build confidence and discipline; I was excited at the idea that I would also learn something while she trains; and I was secretly hoping that in the long term she could defend herself, so I would not have to worry that much when she will be out in the World. The school exceeded my expectations by far.

I did not expect that the expertise, grace and humanity shown by the teachers would emulate Charlotte’s best traits. I saw her persisting during a test when she could not break a board and ultimately succeeding. I saw her training sometime for more than 15 hours a week to be ready for her black belt test, and always with a smile on her face. I saw her helping other kids learning their forms. I saw her socializing with confidence with every kids and adults in the club. She deserves a lot of credit, but the school was instrumental in making her a better person.

As for me, I got the chance to progress with my daughter. Overcoming the same hurdles, at the same time; learning our forms together; struggling with the same kicks. Testing for the black belt together is now one of my most cherished memories and, for that, I am...

This is the perfect place to learn the real Taekwondo, like how it was taught traditionally, and not just for competition. If you want to learn the techniques, this is the best place in the area and probably in the country (I have not much experience with other schools so don't want to say it definitely). Master Kim is a Taekwondo master and a great teacher. It is amazing how many classes he taught personally as a grand master of Taekwondo. You'll get personal pointers from him and especially for beginners it's truly valuable. Those pointers can really go a long way even long after you stop practicing Taekwondo. If you want to learn more than just the technique, the way Taekwondo is taught here is full of oriental philosophy and you practice martial arts like you are creating an artwork, and you will find it reveals your aesthetics, your intention and other aspects of your inner self.
