I had a wonderful experience buying a Persian rug from Main Street Oriental rugs in historic Ellicott City.
Until venturing there, I assumed that these beauties were the purview of only the wealthy. I did not at all expect to find anything I liked that I could afford. I was pleasantly surprised at the range of prices Mr. Bagha was able to share, including many within my budget. For the same price as a synthetic, machine-made Oriental style rug on sale at Macy’s, I was able to buy a Persian Sarouk rug from the 1940’s, all hand knotted of wool and in terrific condition. This particular rug was just one of many beautiful rugs, most new, that Mr. Bagha and his staff showed me. I know they had many, many more.
I am happy to own such a rug. While people all over the world have treasured these rugs for centuries, these wonderful creations, steeped in ancient traditions, could not be more relevant today: works of art, hand made by skilled artisans, often in villages, using centuries-old techniques with environmentally kind, renewable, sustainable materials—wool and sometimes silk.
My rug is nearly 80 years old and still in fine condition, soft and thick. I never realized that such a rug is also very practical and can last for generations.
Mr. Bagha was very knowledgeable and explained the rugs he showed me, without pressure. In fact, he allows customers to take home rugs and see how they look there, with no obligation to buy.
I ventured into the shop out of curiosity, never expecting to buy an Oriental rug. It was a new experience for me and daunting, but Mr. Bagha and his staff were very courteous and friendly and put me at ease.
One of the perks about shopping there is that it is located on Main Street in a charming, historic stone town full of shops and restaurants. Shopping there makes for a pleasant, full day.
If you are shopping for a beautiful rug, you should definitely check out Main Street...
Read moreMy husband and I ordered and purchased a custom made wool and silk Nourison oriental style rug for our family room in 2006. After ten years of continual usage, we noticed some wearing although only recently followed through with contacting Main Street Oriental Rugs in downtown Ellicott City, Maryland, to talk to them about cleaning and repairing our rug. We initially spoke with Mr. Mojan Bagha and told him what we thought we needed. Mr. Bagha confirmed Main Street Oriental Rugs did this type of work all the time and gave us a ballpark quote from our needs description with the understanding he needed to see the rug to confirm the quote. We set up a time for my husband and I to deliver the rug. Although our quote was increased when Mr. Bagha and his assistant saw the rug, we were thrilled at the prospect of having the rug repaired and finally cleaned after all these years of regular usage. Main Street Oriental Rugs notified us once the work was completed. Since Downtown Ellicott City parking can be difficult although we were extremely lucky when we initially delivered the rug, we asked Mr. Bagha if it was possible to have the rug delivered to us at an additional cost so we didn't have to negotiate the narrow streets and sparse parking. Mr. Bagha was happy to provide the additional service, and we were beyond thrilled when the rug was delivered with some assistance to us in placing the custom sized rug as we wished. It was an absolute pleasure working with Main Street Oriental Rugs from start to finish, and we would recommend them to even the most particular customer who is only familiar with dealing with the best of the best. The individuals we interacted with were knowledgeable, pleasant, and professional. I don't think we could have asked for...

Preparing for entertaining during the 2019 holiday season, we decided it was time to have our area rugs cleaned. It had been more than 15 years for some of these rugs, and a few had some damage that threatened their integrity. We contacted Main Street Oriental Rugs for an estimate, and were pleasantly surprised at both the price they quoted and the turnaround time they promised.
We explained what we wanted done, and they were very accommodating - even being able to repair the rugs that we thought might be past saving. We decided to drop our rugs off (although I think they will arrange to pick them up at your home - for an extra fee, of course), which is really convenient. Their store is on Main Street in old Ellicott City and, f you're familiar with that, you know finding a place to park close to where you want to be can be a challenge. Fortunately, there's a space right across the street that's reserved for loading/unloading, so parking is never a problem.
Once they had moved the rugs into their store, they did a quick assessment and discussed what they would do and how the rugs would be treated - all in clear and easy-to-understand language. They notified us when the rugs were ready - a day or two before their estimate, as I recall.
Both my wife and I were extremely pleased with the way they looked - noticeably brighter colors and they felt - and smelled - like new. We couldn't be more pleased and would highly recommend Main Street Oriental Rugs to anyone who is looking to give their area rugs a good and thorough cleaning. Don't be put off by the name - even if your rugs aren't strictly 'oriental', they'll still take care of them for you.
I know this - it won't be another 15 years before we...
