Earlier this year, I was seen in the Emergency Department of Kaiser Westside Medical Center. I was diagnosed with Serotonin Syndrome (for the second time in less than a year). I was given large doses of Ativan to control the painful, involuntary muscle contractions I was having. At some point, I lost consciousness from the Ativan and was admitted to the ICU. When I awoke in the ICU, I experienced a nightmare of unnecessary pain and humiliation that still haunts me.
I was treated without regard for my patient rights in the ICU. I was in four point restrains and had a breathing apparatus in my mouth. I was told by the attendant (I don't think she was a nurse) that I was in the four-point restraints because I had tried to get out of bed while I was sedated and the breathing apparatus was necessary because of the sedation. Also, I was NPO because there was a concern I might need emergency surgery. I understand that these were a medical necessity to enable Kaiser ICU to provide me with the medical care I needed. What followed, though, was not only unnecessary, but, cruel and dehumanizing. It was approximately 2am when the sedation wore off. Even though I was awake and cooperative, she (the attendant) refused to remove the restraints no matter how much I begged and pleaded. It wasn't just being restrained that I was upset about, my admitting condition caused severe, painful involuntary muscle contractions. As the sedation medicine had worn off, the pain had returned. The only relief from the spasms I had been able to get, before the medication was administered, was from using my muscles. Just being allowed to move in the bed, to relieve the pain, would have been a huge mercy. Just to be clear, I was cogent and cooperative. I would have remained in the bed and simply would have wriggled around for relief from the pain. Still, she would not release the restraints because, "it's the doctors' orders" but she did not attempt to contact a physician to notify them of my need. Helpless and in pain, I pleaded for hours, but I was still kept in the restraints. Later in the morning, more staff arrived, and I hoped that the restraints would be removed. They also refused to remove them. Again, they made no attempt to contact a physician to notify them of my need. It was more than terrible. Then it got worse. I needed to have a bowel movement. They still refused to let me out of the four-point restraints. I was forced to have a bowel movement with two staff members standing by the bed. No attempt was made to give me any privacy. They could have released me from the restraints, held a sheet over me for privacy or they could have stepped away from the bed for a few minutes. They did not. Nothing was done to afford me any privacy. I was completely vulnerable in the restraints, and I felt humiliated, ashamed and embarrassed. Then, a short while later, I needed to have another bowel movement. Exactly the same treatment. I felt like I was in a nightmare when I needed to have a third bowel movement. It wasn't exactly the same this time though, this time, one of the staff at my bedside said, "Do you always poop so much?" I guess he just wanted to make sure a felt as humiliated as humanly possible. He succeeded! I have never had my privacy violated to such an extreme degree, and I never would have expected it in a hospital. Also, all this time, I was in physical pain from the muscle spasms. So, for hours, I was kept in unnecessary pain and I was embarrassed and humiliated beyond imagination. The experience was one of the worst in my life, and I am still suffering. I've had terrible dreams about this awful experience. Also, I am scared to go to the Emergency Department because I am afraid it will...
Read moreThis review is for the doctors and midwives in Labor and delivery. I have never been so offended in my life. My daughter was here to deliver my grandson and when we arrived she was asked her birthing plan. Everyone loved her plan until it came time to move things along so they could get her out of their hair. She was bullied by every single midwife except for one and I wish I could remember her name. It was literally at one point 4 of them against my daughter bullying her. One of the midwives even asked her if she âhad learned anymore medical advice from TikTokâsâ that sheâd like to talk about. My daughter had a great plan when we got there and in great spirits. She was excited and they ruined what should have been a very happy and exciting moment for her and my son inlaw. Iâm very happy I was there to advocate for her when they had her backed into a corner. She was vulnerable and had given them very good and detailed reasons for not wanting some of their very pushy and unnecessary interventions. I will NEVER recommend this department to anyone and I advise everyone that has a specific birthing plan to go elsewhere. Kaiser has really went downhill in the last decade. She even had a nurse come in with a bad attitude and gave her a shot in her rear end with NO WARNING AT ALL. I felt like every single person we dealt with from the moment she didnât want to follow their plan and stick to her lied to us. Every nurse we had said theyâd advocate for her until it came time for them to do so. Having a baby shouldnât be this way. You shouldnât be forced into things you donât want. Iâll she was told several times itâs your body and your choice but do whatâs right for your baby. They couldnât even give me the science to back up what they were claiming. Disgusting behavior from someone that you should be able to trust with your life. Never again! Thanks for ruining my daughters special day westside labor and delivery! Shame on you all! For the TikTok comment from the midwife that should have kept her big mouth opinion to herself. That will be reported! You should not be in such a position if you have things like that to say. You belittled my daughter and made her feel stupid. You should not have the job you have with things like that coming out of your mouth! Learn some class and respect your patients! Pathetic excuse for...
Read moreReally awful experience, worst Iâve ever had with an emergency room. When called back to the triage room, there was garbage on the floor, it didnât seem Clean, but ok maybe they just dropped Some stuff. The wait was long once I got in there but I do expect that. The doctor told me I would need a CT scan, with that I knew I would need an IV, the nurse came In, took my blood and left and I said am I getting an IV? She didnât know, she comes back and says yes I was supposed to get an IV, so she grabs my other arm to start one and I let her know that arm has an issue getting it to stay in the vein, she doesnât listen tells me she will get it and proceeds. Iâm taken back to the waiting area, which is maybe a 8x8â square with curtains around it and other people waiting right next to you. Wait there for probably over an hour and then get taken back to CT scan. The CT guy was the only good experience I had, so nice, very comforting. He starts to inject me with the dye and I tel him right away itâs not right and my arm is getting very tight. He stops it but not before around 90-100 ccs of dye and entered my arm, not my vein, from Improper iv placement. If youâve never experienced this, itâs extremely painful. He placed the next iv in my other arm and got my CT done. He asked who the nurse was and told me to let my doctor and nurse know what happened. Welp! After 2 hours of waiting and my arm getting increasingly huge, and no doctor or nurse in sight I went to go find one myself. Leaving your patients for over 2 hours and not one word, not even a âhey, we are so busy itâs going to be a whileâ after there has been a sheisty IV that has hurt your patient even more?? It was crazy. When I finally found the doctor his first word was âwe are discharging youâ lol no word about my CT findings or damage done to my arm and what I should look out for with my arm. It was so awful. The 2 other people next toe also had the same complaints of waiting and no one coming to them. I understand they are busy, but leaving your patient for hours without one word? Absolutely so wrong for how much we pay. Would never come here again for...
