Dr. Kim initially diagnosed me with costochondritis, which is often considered a broad or non-specific diagnosis aka bucket diagnosis. I had mentioned slipping rib syndrome (SRS) to him, but he claimed I did not have it and seemed somewhat unfamiliar with the condition itself. The physical evaluation I underwent with Dr. Kim was very tender and exacerbated my symptoms for weeks. I believe this tenderness should have been a red flag, indicating that it was more than just costochondritis. He also recommended nerve blocks, which I did not pursue because my symptoms are so widespread that it wouldn't have made a significant difference or been helpful as a diagnostic criterion. I left feeling dissatisfied with the appointment.
A year later, as my symptoms remained unchanged and were progressively worsening, I consulted a thoracic surgeon at Baylor. A chest and abdomen CT scan revealed that my costal margin was disintegrating, a symptom consistent with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) patients and aligns with SRS. This was read by my doctor, indicating that few are familiar with the indications of imaging. Additionally, the scan showed nerve impingement in the lower ribs (8-10). My physical evaluation also supported the diagnosis of SRS, as evidenced by the Dr. Adam Hansen technique (not the hooking technique). Although I understand that SRS is not widely recognized and EDS is often misunderstood, I just wish that Dr. Kim had looked into this further before jumping to costochondritis. Read the Madeka et al. (2023) review and the Hansen et al. (2024) prospective study if you think you have symptoms consistent with SRS. There is undoubtedly something to be said about the power of knowing and having an...
Read moreI had a few struggles recovering from surgery, but now I am 3 months post surgery and I can tell you I feel so much better. Of course, I don't have any reflux, indigestion or heartburn since day one and no stomach meds. I've lost weight and now I am experiencing much more positive health benefits than I expected. I feel better. I have more energy. I don't hardly cough anymore. My blood pressure is back to normal and I'm no longer taking my BP medicine. My blood sugars are all normal. I did not realize how much better I would feel as a whole. Now that my body is processing food the way it way was meant to, I am simply amazed at the overall health benefits I have gotten. This surgery, Dr. Kim, Leo NP, and his entire team have truly been a Godsend to me. They were always quick to respond to any issue or questions that I had. I could not have asked or even dreamed of...
Read moreFrom beginning our experience with Dr Kim and the Methodist team has been remarkable. Each aspect of diagnosis, education, presurgery testing to determine procedures needed and actual surgery and post op has been without flaw. The entire team is friendly, courteous, very competent and always willing to answer ANY questions. Our first meeting with Dr Kim had us with a long list of questions----we never had to ask them as he answered all we had and more all on his own. Our daughter is an RN and she told us that Methodist was the only place to go for our needs and boy was she right.
We would without question recommend Dr Kim and his Methodist team to anyone needing the specialized care they...
