Large supermarket in the mid-price range. Long & well-staffed meat/fish counters, though there can be long lines at rush times.
MB specializes in a large selection of "popular" product lines while lacking some of the better, higher end brands.
Some of their in-house brands for staples like toilet paper, paper towels, etc, are not as good as competition like Stop & Shop.
MB is a bit lower cost than other large chains - a bit less than Stop&Shop (using the occasional coupons there) and more than a Wal-Mart or Costco which matches their respective quality levels.
Since MB is closer to us than S&S, we tend to go there more often and visit S&S for their better house brands and selection of some specialty items that MB doesn't carry.
If you don't care a lot about particular brands, MB might be the better choice BUT you have to check the produce closely and rummage through their large bins to ensure you get fresh items. S&S produce is much more limited and suffers the same caveat.
So, it's a toss up. If S&S were closer than MB, we'd go there first, then finish up at MB for anything we didn't find or liked at S&S.
MB also forgoes a lot of specials and coupons. Instead, they price everything a tad lower which works out the same, or a bit less cost, in the long run with less hassle over coupons.
Parking is good at MB with a large lot.
MB checkout is often a problem with large lines at busy times with 3-6 carts queued ahead of you at each station. They also don't have any automation or self-scanning and checkout like S&S. As such, MB doesn't require and doesn't provide a shopper's loyalty card that S&S uses for the automation. So, MB keeps it simple and ends up a few dollars cheaper.
Re the above, we rate both our local Hudson MA MB & S&S supermarkets as 7 out of 10.
If you only care about lowest price and don't have any preference on speciality brands and don't mind long lines, MB Hudson may be your better bet. As with any place, you still have to always check what you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt really is true that Market Basket does more for your dollar. Iāve been shopping at Market Basket for years, and been shopping here since it opened. The store is always clean, aisles are well stocked, and the front end staff are always friendly. I really like shopping here. The deli staff will slice you up anything you need, and there are some real all stars back there. I think thereās a reason why itās always so crowded back there, even when the weekend and evening rushes have calmed down. Those folks deserve a lot of praise.
The prices are also very competitive in the Hudson/Marlborough area. With what seems like countless options for grocery shopping, Market Basket is a standout. Where else can you get the most delicious, soft, wheat bread for around $1 every single day? Iāll tell you, nowhere but here. The hot area, market cafe, has all you could ask for in a prepared food section. The bakery is always stocked with delicious and diverse pastry (try the ricotta square and thank me later š). And the meat department does a great job keeping stock of all the cuts you might be looking for.
The produce area is the only location I have some doubts/concerns with though. While this location offers some of the best variety, Iām talking fruits and vegetables you rarely see in the other grocery chains in the area, the quality of some of the produce could be improved. A lot of times I find myself picking through produce that is obviously picked over, bruised, damaged, and on some cases beginning to spoil. On the bright side though, when the produce is ripe, and the shelves are well stocked, the prices canāt really be beat.
Market Basket knows a thing or two about bringing great value to your grocery shopping, and they do so with top notch class, care, and cleanliness that keeps me coming...
