Lotus Boutique & Studio — Local services in Kanab

While in Kanab for a family reunion over Easter weekend, my wife sent me on a mission to find rings from in town (she enjoys collecting them). Unfamiliar with the area, I walked down center street. Not far before I found Lotus boutique & studio. I walk in to check, they did in fact have rings. The layout of the store had this ring display to the right of the register, between the register and the door. While looking at the rings, I overheard the ongoing transaction wrapping up. In response to this, I stepped back to clear the path, as I was standing between her and the exit. When I stepped back, I made contact with a piece of art displayed on the end of the display directly behind me, maybe 4 ft from the register and ring display. The artwork is about 16” square. I do not recall if the artwork was hung on the end of the display (overhanging the edges of the display by about 4-6 inches), or leaned against it. All I know is I came into contact with it on accident. After it fell, the woman who I assume is one of the owners, remarked to her husband that they should move the artwork because it was in a bad location. Her husband then approached, picking up the art stating he needed to check for damage. He examined the damage and found minor damage on two corners of the frame. Because of this damage they made it clear and apparent that I was expected to purchase this item. I asked if I could pay for it to be reframed as that would likely be cheaper than the cost of the item. (the “damage” was on the outside of the vinyl frame). They replied that it could not be reframed as they are ordered in from, I think she said, New Jersey. I am not aware of any framed artwork that can not be reframed, but I digress. Luckily, the wife said that she would be willing to do a “cost replacement” of $75 rather than charging me the $165 sticker price listed on it. I concluded the transaction and bumped into another display on my way out, but luckily, no fragile items were damaged. I am not a clumsy person, things are just too close together in my opinion. The husband stated he would be following me out to have a personal conversation with me. He then asked if this would affect my ability to provide for myself or my family. I absolutely appreciate the sentiment, just found it interesting that it happened after the fact rather than before any transaction took place, as there were no other people in the shop throughout the ordeal. The boutique advertised locally made items, but stated this item was ordered. Additionally, there is a 10-month-old photo on Google reviews (the canvas of an X shape in many colors) of the shop where the very same artwork is displayed on the wall, having not been purchased in the meantime.

I entered this store unsure if I would even leave with a ring because I was unsure of pricing. I ended up leaving, with only 25% of that transaction being the ring that brought me in. My advice is that if you do shop in this store, you need to be 100% aware of your surroundings, do not step backwards even if it’s half a step.
