*UPDATE: *TLDR: Great location, love Alan! Whole crew seems great, but please see update below original review for a quick not-so-great update about one experience with Jilla; but overall still a 5 for the fantastic Alan (who was not involved in the less-than-great situation detailed below, bc heās perfect) and the location and crew!
(Original) I always get my undercut buzzed at Haircuttery. Iāve gone to lots of different location with lots of great stylists, but Alan was beyond wonderful!! Heās the first stylist who has taken the time to get my buzzed scalp as close to bald as possible. I always mention that I would love that to my stylists, but heās the first one to make that come true for me! My fave stylist forever! I will definitely come back! Thank you Alan!
*UPDATE CONTINUED: *TLDR: Jilla (apologies if misspelled) is probably a good stylist who is nice to her regulars, but had zero interest in basic customer service with me, maybe bc my hair was a mess or bc I was getting a cheap service (partial buzz cut for my existing undercut).
*I tried twice in the last couple weeks to make an appt with Alan but I had to cancel bc of car issues and illness, but had to get my overgrown hair cut today so I had to do it before he arrived for his shift, sadly. Jilla (sorry if misspelled) cut my hair and did the buzz as I requested; she seems perfectly capable and I have no doubt sheās a skilled stylist. However she had zero interest in spending more than the bare minimum time or effort on me. I chalked it up to her maybe fitting me in between appointments, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. My undercut was overgrown to the point of looking a disaster (my own fault), so maybe she thought I was a lost cause, or maybe my cheap clothes made me look like I wouldnāt tip well. Anyway, she didnāt say hello or say her name (although I finally asked for her name at the end). Iām not tender-headed, but she buzzed my head so quickly (which doesnāt bother me on its own - efficiencyās great!) that she hurt the back of my neck with the razor. I said Ow, she laughed a little and said, What? I said it hurt my neck, she did the same thing again , I said Ow again, she ignored my comment this time. At the end she gestured toward the mirror; I asked if I could also look at the back of the cut with the handheld mirror. She held it and tried to scan the back for me way too quickly for me to actually see, so I gently held onto the mirror with her and guided it to go slower. She left the long part of my hair (itās an undercut) and the fringe bangs on my forehead in the ponytail holder she had put them together in, although the bangs had partially fallen out and the ponytail was a sloppy ālazy bun;ā although she had combed a small section of hair out briefly during the cut, she never touched it with a comb or brush afterward (maybe Iām spoiled by Alan asking if I want it brushed out and want product in it). And then she had me get out of the chair, ready to be done with me (maybe 10-15 minutes after my arrival). I stepped to the side to look in the mirror next to us (unoccupied), taking my hair out of the ponytail myself and finger combing it out to its full glory lol. Saw a few short hairs she hadnāt fully shaved off, but otherwise good. I asked her to cut that bit off; she did so without a word, then met me at the front, where she warmly greeted the next guest (maybe one of her regulars). I tipped 20%, which I consider the bare minimum, bc I felt like she considered me a waste of her time. She did well with the cut generally and did a good job getting hairs off my face and neck. Again, probably good and nice in general, just had no time for me. So yeah, I will never voluntarily sit in her chair again. (And next time Iāll wait for an appointment with the G.O.A.T. Alan no matter what acts of God stand in...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went in today for a trim. It had been a while since my hair was cut and the length was nearing the bottom of my butt. For at least the last 13 years I have kept the same exact hairstyle, slightly tapered at the front edges with the length ending at the top of my butt. When I went in, I asked for a 4" trim, which I had already measured at home would be the exact length I would need to get it back to hitting the top of my butt. The stylist asked me multiple times, "four inches?" and I kept saying yes, I want a four inch trim. Then she pulled out her comb than had a ruler on it to indicate how many inches it would be. She held my hair to the comb, put my ends to the 4" mark and told me that would be 4". I agreed that I wanted 4" cut off from the lentgh as an all-over trim. This was made VERY clear. She then proceeds to grab all of my hair at once, took the scissors and just chopped it off in one swift cut. Then she shows me the chunk of hair she cut off. I was in absolute shock. I held my long chunk of hair up to her ruler/comb and she had cut off 7 inches! And 7 jagged inches at that. I think the other stylists in the salon were just as shocked as I was at what had just happened. My hair is long and what I am most known for. It's part of my identity. And now it's an absolute uneven hack job and my hair now ends at my rib cage vs my butt. Never in my life have I had a bad haircut. I am easy to please because in my opinion it's very hard to mess up long hair, especially considering I don't even have layers. Another stylist felt bad for me and tried to salvage it and thankfully didn't charge me for the disaster, but there was only so much that could be done without making matters worse. I ended up leaving with super uneven ends and probably about 8" shorter instead of 4". I'm attaching a picture of what my hair normally looks like after a haircut, and what I left the salon...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had a bad haircut experience here with one stylist, but the only reason Iām giving 3 Stars is because Alan saved my hair cut. With my first stylist all I asked for was a simple straight across cut. As sheās finishing up cutting my hair she asked if I wanted it blow dried. I said sure, but what she didnāt tell me was that it was going to cost $40 more for that. She took so long blow drying my hair it felt like she was doing it by each individual strand. Once she finished she gave me the mirror to see and I told her it looked uneven and asked her to fix it. She proceeded to tell me that it wasnāt and that it was just the way the mirror angle was. I then went up to the counter to check out and she rang up my total and I was shocked. A hair cut is $29 which is what I was expecting but the total was $68. If she would have told me I was going to be paying $39 extra to get my hair blow dried I would have said no. (Where I grew up, blow drying the hair at the end of the appointment is something that always happened without extra charge). I paid and left and got to my car and cried because I examined my hair more in the mirror. It was so uneven, the right side was shorter than the left, it was so choppy not even throwing it up in a ponytail looked good. I made a new appointment with Alan a few days later and he was so kind and apologetic and corrected my botched haircut. He listened to me about my concerns from what the first stylist did, and he went above and beyond to fix it and give me what I was looking for. 100%...
