I have been a Gold's Gym member since 2007. I have spent thousands of dollars in both my gym membership and personal training over these past 14 years. In fact, there has only been a short period of time in my adult life where I haven't been a Gold's Gym member. It was when I was 23 years old, and had brain surgery to relieve and extract an epidural hematoma, rendering me bedridden for several months to recover. I was a member at the Hollywood location, and could most definitely not do any sort of physical exercise during this time. Instead of accepting my doctor's notes and photos of my injury as proof I was incapacitated, they requested I go IN PERSON to the club on Cole Ave., with the right side of my head shaved, and 4 inches of stitches cascading down the side of it, to cancel my membership. This should have been when I stopped going to Gold's altogether! I decided to give them another chance when I moved back to Long Beach.
I have referred friends and have had them sign up. I have purchased merchandise and spent countless hours exercising in their facilities. In February of 2020, I purchased a personal training pack, much like I would have normally done once it was time to re-up on sessions, completely unaware, much like most Americans, of the then looming pandemic. As we of course know, the country shutdown shortly after that purchase.
I went to Gold's the day BEFORE the shutdown for a workout, and had a session with my trainer the day prior to that. I then suffered an awful injury rendering me unable to even THINK of exercising from April 2020 - July 2020. In August, I remembered I had sessions that I should probably get refunded, as there was no opening date in sight for gyms, let alone the country. I inquired via email about a refund, and was given this response from a Sindy Rodriguez: "I can submit the refund for you, but no refunds will be processed until the facility opens. Unfortunately there isn't anything going out at this time." This person also told me: "If you didn't want to continue with your training upon reopening we can issue a refund for the sessions, but I do want to advise that no refunds are being processed until the facility reopens." I have been told a refund WOULD be processed pending reopening. While I was annoyed that a global corporate gym was not able to process a credit card refund from an office not inside my club's location, and that it would only be happening pending reopening of said location, I was patient, and waited for what was then an indefinite amount of time for my refund. As soon as the go ahead was given to reopen in the city of Long Beach in March, Gold's Gym promptly did so. I then reached out to FINALLY inquire about my refund on March 12th, -- it's now been over ONE YEAR since I purchased the sessions. I was informed this would be sent to corporate for approval and processing. After checking in a couple times to see what the progress was, I received a phone call on April 13th, letting me know that corporate has denied my request for a refund, stating they were unable to process it because it does not meet the following 2 pieces of criteria -- 1. I did not move over 25 miles from the gym's location and 2. I did not sustain an injury rendering me incapable to exercise, permanently. While these terms would be fairly reasonable during any other time, it is not in the slightest during a global pandemic where EVERYTHING IS FLUID AND COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE, this is utterly unacceptable.
Gold's, you lost a member for life, and I will never refer another person here. It's a shame since the staff is SO lovely. JUST GIVE ME...
Read moreThis Gold’s Gym is usable, but not great by any means. I’ve been going for about five months now, have attended a ton of different gyms and worked at a gym myself. Based on my experience, here’s what I find to be the pros and cons of this gym.
Pros: +This gym has a ton of lifting equipment. While peak hours can become crowded, there are so many machines that you will typically be able to find something to do. Whether it lines up with your training goals for the day is another story. +This gym also has a robust cardio section. I have never seen the cardio area fully taken up. +The cleaning staff is thorough. They do great work! +As of the date of this review, 7/19/2022, it seems like they’ve reupholstered some benches and equipment. +Staff is friendly! +There is free two hour parking diagonally to this gym at Lot B. No validation required. Cons: -All the equipment is incredibly run down. This includes machines with broken cables, permanently bent barbells, dumbbells that are so worn that you cannot read what weight they are. There is rust everywhere on the exposed steel, all of which can be hazardous. -In fact, the entire gym is incredibly run down. The flooring is uneven, lifting in some places. In the women’s locker, several lockers are unlockable or broken. There have been several faucets out of order for the entirety of my time here. The ceiling is run down and exposed. -I attend in the evening and I noticed that not a lot of people clean their equipment here. -Much of the equipment is haphazardly placed. It’s clear that this gym received equipment throughout the years and plopped it down wherever there was space. This means there is a glute kickback machine, where you are on all fours, right in front of the stairs, where everyone coming down can watch your glute workout. Consequently, it means a lot of the equipment doesn’t match (although this is not a huge deal). -The lifting area is in the basement, which can be stale or musty to some people. I personally do not find this to be a huge issue, and there are some fans placed along the walls.
I’ve visited several Gold’s, and this is probably the most run-down Gold’s out there. There are other gripes I’ve experienced that may or not be a con to you – for example, there are people here bothering me where I’d rather be left alone, and people often hoard weights. Additionally, I can’t speak for cycling or other classes here, which I hear are alright. My recommendation for anyone looking for a gym would be to look at some of the other surrounding gyms, especially new ones opening – Gold’s will be opening a new location in Cerritos soon, and a new LA Fitness is slated to open at Marina Pacifica. However, if this is the closest gym to you or within walking distance, it’s...
Read moreI joined this gym back in December of 2018. It's within walking distance of my house and they offer childcare with a small additional fee. The gym it's self is good and the staff members are very friendly. However my complaint is with the childcare facility. My son is 18 months old and was recently bullied and hurt by another child while in their care. I'm happy I decided to cut my workout short that day to go check on my little one because just as soon as I did was when I witnessed a little boy viciously push my baby to the ground and the daycare provider claims to have saw NOTHING when I brought it to her attention. I made it my business to address the parent of that child who assaulted my son and the mother dismissed me and was very unremorseful which only made matters worse. My son was the only AFRICAN AMERICAN child who attended their childcare facility on a regular basis which leads me to believe that was the reason why he was singled out to be bullied and attacked. There were other children in their care and none of them where harmed. I was even told by other NON-BLACK parents that their children have NEVER had any problems which proves my point. My son being the only brown skin child puts an automatic target on his head. What disgusted me the most is that staff members didn't even bother to make the mother of that child apologize to me or my son. Everyone made excuses for her child who assulted my son and not once was an apology enforced from either the parent or the staff which is very sad. I cancelled my memebership because I don't feel comfortable leaving my son in their care anymore. There's a difference between "children being children" and children demonstrating HATEFUL and ABUSIVE behavior that was obviously learned within their household. The misguided anger and hostility that boy had towards my baby was UNCALLED for! My son is an infant at heart and didn't even try to fight back when attacked because he's not use to that type of behavior. If you want to go to this gym for a good workout? Go for it!👍 but I strongly suggest if you're BLACK please DO NOT LEAVE YOU'RE CHILD IN THEIR CARE unless your little one is old enough to TALK and tell you what's going on and is capable of defending themselves.
Have a...
