I’ve been a loyal Color Coat customer since discovering their original location on Sunset, thanks to a friend’s recommendation. I’ve always loved how collaborative and creative the techs are — helping me bring fun, Pinterest-inspired designs to life at a surprisingly reasonable price (especially with how pricey nails are nowadays).

Lately, I’ve been going to their new location on Selma Ave. My first visit there was amazing — my nails lasted 7 weeks (yes, I stretch them as long as possible!). But on my most recent visit, things didn’t start out so well. I wasn’t greeted warmly, and I was quoted way more than I’ve ever paid at Color Coat for a pretty simple set (just silver French tips). Then, while filing off my old Gel-X, my thumb was literally burning — I was seriously ready to walk out mid-appointment.

Enter BB. She stepped in as my technician and completely turned everything around. She was kind, professional, and really listened to what I wanted. Not only did she make the experience enjoyable again, but she also created a super cute set that matched my vision — and she did it affordably and with so much care.

Gah wish I had a better experience here today.

Five hours after getting my gel mani, it has already started to chip. The french chrome also shows black in some parts, and the glitter has bled.

The customer service wasn’t great. After I showed the nail tech my reference photo, I was given a price of $83.

An hour later, the nail tech informed me the price had changed to $103. The receptionist translated her claim that I had asked for the hard gel, which I did not. They said it was a misunderstanding, but since the hard gel was already completed, I would need to pay the $103.

Frustrated, I downgraded my designs to a chrome french tip to cut my costs to $90. It all left a sour taste in my mouth.

I decided to try this new location (they also have another not far from here). I called ahead to confirm they could do a gel manicure with a silver line and was told yes. When I arrived, I was seated right away and the shop looked clean. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The nail tech didn't follow my request, filed my nails down so thin they hurt, and when I mentioned my cuticles weren't done, she unevenly cut them. She insisted on adding chrome even though I said no--and just as I expected, it turned out messy and looked like glitter scattered all over.

I was so embarrassed that I asked the receptionist to remove everything. They switched me to another tech who removed the gel but still wanted to file my already damaged nails thinner. At the end, they still charged me despite the poor service and the fact I left with nothing.
