Sad, miserable experience from a retailer I'd sworn off at the bequest of their highly inflammatory decision to pull the Ivanka Trump clothing line, ruefully injecting political folly as yet another opportunity for failure in an already struggling storefront retail industry. Giving the previously beloved store another chance, driving PAST three retailers I knew would welcome this last-minute Monday night sale, the four of us - three children under the age of 10 - rushed in, seeking rescue from a late reminder of this morning's Spring Picture Day at Destin Elementary. We're already VERY familiar with the store, as my kids usually participate in their annual fashion show, to support Destin's singular department store to host a full-service beauty counter - an effort itself gleaning an average $500-$700 purchase for my children's outfits alone. So, when we rushed in at 20 minutes before close (9pm), we were shocked to be scowled at by a slender lady with medium long curly black hair who later announced herself as the manager, carrying only a radio, but ranting and stomping around so annoyed, I dare not ask for the customer service we clearly needed. In the little time we were there, I managed to rush a typically unmotivated 9 year old boy with a stack of IZOD into the dressing room (to which we'd asked two associates before given directions), overcoming a wardrobe malfunction which resulted in having to exchange the item - again, unassisted, even by the cashier looking on, casually rehanging clothes, and all with ten minutes to spare, despite the distraction of a KMart-esque announcement at 8:45 rushing us to make our "final selections." Hurrying to accommodate this, we ran to the girls section thankfully crammed into the tiny space adjacent to the ever-dwindling boys section, where my 7 year old daughter found a size 10 dress she couldn't live without, hung in front of unlike dresses, or I would've grabbed a 7, a 4, and bolted for the checkout. I didn't expect a size 10 to fit my (newly) 7 yr old daughter and because I care about how my kids look in photos they'll show their own someday, we split up to find the rack with the other sizes, and I quickly grabbed an alternate I was trying to convince her to accept, when the initially unpleasant associate, CORRECTION: MANAGER, interrupted us from about 5 yards away, announced herself as the manager, then abruptly asked if we wanted them to hold our purchases until the next day, "because it's 5 minutes until 9 and we're trying to close." No help, mind you, despite witnessing me talking my son out of trying on the blazer we'd both wanted him to wear for school pictures. Luckily, I was able to have my daughter try the size 10 dress on over her other clothes, while yet another cashier threatened our $125 purchase (easily $300+ but for the several items we were repeatedly discouraged from selecting) chasing me away from two $12-15 matching hair accessories for the girls, warning that our sale might not go through because it was exactly 9pm, and their registers close down automatically. I got the name of the manager who'd witnessed such an ordeal, not only offering zero customer service, but actively discouraging what was clearly a guaranteed sale, certain that Belk wouldn't knowingly train against the benchmarks for which its great brand was once known, instead rewarding the customer service vacuum, disorganized racks, sloppy merchandizing, and loyalty-shirking lack of respect for consumers we experienced in return for this retail mistake. Kay Gadsduch? (Verifiable?) You may be the last nail in the coffin of public opinion for Belk, Destin Commons. I'd already heard bad things, and loyalty is lain at the altar of employees as thoughtless as you presented yourself and your teammates. I hope that a proper review will inspire your once respected employer to revisit this disrespectful approach toward its customers. I'm a PR consultant for, among many, a rather large hotel group in the area, and previously recommended Belk as one of Destin Commons' most...
Read moreExtremely uncomfortable and unprofessional experience. I only put two stars instead of one because Maria who helped ring up my mother was a very kind woman unlike some others. I had an awful experience at the Belk perfume counter because of a woman named Gayle. I’m 17, and I made it very clear I didn’t want to download the Belk app when she asked—but she kept pushing. She insisted over and over until I finally gave in just to get her to stop. The app was taking a long time to download, and instead of leaving it alone, she actually told me, “Let’s go outside so it downloads faster,” and walked me out of the store while staring at my phone to make sure it was downloading. I didn’t even make a purchase. She only wanted me to download the app because she’s in some kind of competition with other employees for who can get the most downloads.
What makes this worse is that the same thing happened the last time I came to this Belk, when I was with my sister. Gayle tried to get me to download the app then, too, but it was taking like 10 minutes and I gave up. She made a snarky comment to my sister afterward about how I “couldn’t even wait” for it to finish.
This felt so invasive and inappropriate, especially since I’m a minor. I shouldn’t have to feel pressured or cornered just walking through a store. I’m not writing this to get her fired, but someone really needs to talk to her and put a stop to this kind of behavior. It was unprofessional and completely ruined my...
Read moreMost employees will go above and beyond to help you with your shopping needs. Great products at great prices! Had a sale buy1 get 2 free we saved tons of money! I recommend if you can't try on what your buying don't buy it because of the sales if you have to return something it becomes a hassle and actually cost you more money! We bought 1 pair of men's shorts for $42.00 got 2 free. They didn't fit my husband correctly so we took 2 pairs back to exchange and kept 1 pair. We got $14.99 back for both pair of shorts we returned and had to pay $42.00 a piece for the same shorts in a bigger size. The sale was no longer going so we had to return then repurchase even though it was the same thing just a different size! In simple we payed $42.00 for 3 pairs of shirts returned 2 pair so we got $14.99 store credit so now we had 1 pair of shorts we payed $27.01for then bought 2 more pair at $42.00 each for a grand total of $111.01 took our store credit of $14.99 off and we payed $96.02 plus taxes for 3 pairs of shorts.
