I'm not one to typically write a poor review, but my last shopping trip to the Riverate JCPenney deserves one.
I have been working from home for the last several years and was recently promoted at work. I now go to the office once a week. I have grown out of my old work clothes so I decided to put together a new minimalist capsule wardrobe. I headed to Penney's to see what I could find. I have been shopping at this location since literally before I was born (my mom bought my baby clothes here). I've always loved shopping at this location.
I walked the floor gathering my selections just as I have always done in the past. I had gathered about 20 items and was excited to try them on. As I approached the dressing room the attendant made a bee line towards me and said, "Oh, I've been watching you! You know you're not taking all of those in there (sarcastically huffing and laughing). I'm going to sit right here...you just gave me a reason to sit...and you can take 3 in, hand them to me, and I'll hand you 3 more." I was SHOCKED. I told her I needed to take all the items in. I tried explaining that I needed all the items so that I could coordinate outfits and I've always shopped like this here. She cut me off and was rudely insistent that she had to make sure all the items made it out of the dressing room. People were staring at the scene she was making. She rattled on and on about people stealing and so on.
I did not understand why this lady was treating me like a prisoner trying to buy too many packages of ramen from commissary. The lady at the jewelry counter had this associate's back explaining to me that "people steal". She was pretty rude too.
I ended up trying on most of the clothes over my clothes on the sales floor while the attendant continued making snarky comments towards me. Then when I was ready to try on the clothes that I had narrowed it down to, I spoke with an associate near the men's dressing room and she was sweet and said I could use the men's dressing room. I did. Then as I was trying on a bra I see a man's head over my door (he was very tall) behind me looking in the 3 panel mirror trying on a hat. Creepy!
I gathered my clothes and found the supervisor. She was apologetic and said I could take my things to the women's changing room. I made my selections and went to the check out and rang out a purchase of around $160.00. I probably would have spent more if I weren't in such a hurry to leave. The ladies at the register were super kind.
I worked at Dillard's all through college and would have never dreamed of treating a customer the way I was treated even if I thought they were stealing.
I may shop here again because it's convenient and most of the staff are extremely kind and I love their clothes, but I can understand why people are saying this mall is going downhill and they are shopping elsewhere.
I can't even say maybe this lady was just having a bad day. She really seemed to have a screw loose.
I should have just walked past her from the get go and told her to call security if she needs to. I was too shocked to think...
Read moreThis is the store that you do not want to shop in! My family returned to this JC Penney on October 26, 202, late day, with a documented cash register receipt problem on the sale we made less than a week ago. The manager then said there was nothing she would do about it because the items were not purchased from that store. That was a wrong statement because the store name is on the receipt. She then said the receipt was in so many words fraudulent and then said the error could only be corrected that day. So much for the JC Penney company policies. Also the manager could have checked on the account records, the company maintains. to verify the items were purchased and verified the accuracy of the receipt. It clearly shows we were overcharge in a number of transactions and not given the 50% off of clearance documented in the promotion advertised at that period of time. There was a large number of errors at the sale as well as at the return process when it was decided to return the expensive bedspread. This store is a LARGE DISAPPOINTMENT. I am a JCP, long time customer, and this experience is the worse I have every been involved in with the company.
I went back to this store on October 30 and discovered the issues behind the misrepresented pricing. The signs on the doors as well as advertised with emails that all items with a pink clearance ticket would be $3.00. Some of the items that I brought to the register were in compliance with pink clearance. However if the store fails to change their pricing in the system, the item rings up at a much higher pricing. Other JC Penney stores immediately correct the issue and give the customer the written, communicated pricing, but not this store. Even when the website pricing was presented to the Store Manager from my phone, she explained it did not matter. There are State laws that should be considered in this situation. " The Tennessee Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) makes it a criminal misdemeanor for businesses or individuals to engage in unfair or deceptive practices, including false advertising." I suspect this is not a misdemeanor issue just poor practices at this store but consumers do need to be...

JC PENNEY used to be my first stop when shopping for kid's clothes. This is NO LONGER the case! For some reason, in their infinite wisdom, they seem to only cater to "husky" in boys pant sizes. My kids, who are tall and skinny, are simply out of luck. Now, JC PENNEY is my last stop when shopping for my kids. I also have 8 grandkids. Since this is the last place I'll shop for Kids clothing, JC PENNEY is out 10 kids .. plus all the other relatives who shops with is.
JC PENNEY used to be nothing more than another overpriced store in the mall. Have you been there lately? They usually have really good sales going on. We actually choose JCP for our Back-to-School clothes shopping, when they usually have 60 - 70% off. Too, this is one of the few stores who carry shirts in my size. I look at the price and cringe, only to find out the price is actually 50 - 70% off. When you do the math, their prices end up in line with Walmart and Target and, in my opinion, you get better quality clothing. The one downside to the Rivergate Store is their lack of cashiers available, making for a longer wait than you...
