i am a 61 year old woman. On 9/28/2023 i had multi level spinal fusion surgery at HSS. Dr.Andrew Sama is my Surgeon. I am a happy, successful and active person. When i reflect back on significant life events, they've all involved a great mentor, coach and the strength of an excellent team, After the age of 50, I completed 2 full distance Ironman races, many marathons and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. Training for an endurance sport is not without pain. Winning the race, achieving my goal was worth months of dedication and the suffering that went with it. Finally the pain won and I lost. Each step i took was excruciating. When I met Dr.Sama, i knew immediately, i had the best surgeon and my new coach. My spinal surgery was my next Mountain to climb and race to win. We reviewed my MRI, we discussed the goal. Dr.Sama designed the strategy. together we agreed to "go for it". Dr. Sama's standard of excellence and that of his team, gave me my life back. I am a few weeks post surgery and I am pain free. this is also an endurance event that i know i will win. Doctor Sama is the gold standard among spine surgeons. On October 31 he and his team spent five hours doing a posterior lumbar laminectomy and three vertebrae fusions. I was released November 4, and when P/T came to me on November 5, my agility staggered them. I find that the OXY and Tylenol are working to alleviate my pain to some degree, but I really want off them as of November 9 so I can return to my normal diet. I had a BM today at 6:30 after four days on stool softeners. My back may be 65% after a year and I'll be happy.

I just want my neuropathy to go bye so I can drive.

On December 20, 2017 Dr. Sama performed a lumbar spinal fusion on me. Dr. Sama and his whole team have been AMAZING !!!!! I chose doctor Sama because I have complete faith in his ability as a doctor and admire his compassion as a care giver. In 2015 he performed back surgery on my husband when no other doctor would, and the surgery was a success.
