I was visiting NYC and my friend suggested that we stop in so I could meet the owner and see what this store had to offer. I had to say, when I walked by and saw the military jackets on display outside, I knew I HAD to check out all the other merch inside! We walk in and immediately the owner remembered my friend and his many purchases there. You would have thought they had been best friends from way back, that's how warm and sincere he was. I tried on the first jacket that I pulled from the rack, it fit wonderfully, I didn't see the price and was truthfully afraid to ask, lol. But when he said it was $35, I was shocked it was so low, so I wanted to hurry up and pay so he wouldn't say he had misquoted. I ended up buying all my souvenirs for my friends here, even though they don't have" I heart NY" on them,I'm sure they will love them just the same. And who doesn't like supporting mom and pop stores? This little gem will always be on my list of places to visit while in NYC, and should be yours too! You will thank...
Read moreI walked in today to get a US Flag patch because I was feeling patriotic. I walked out about an hour later with a flag and a wallet. This man is one of the friendliest people I have ever met and the minute I asked him about his experience with the military, his eyes lit up. He stumbled over his words as he struggled to contain his excitement, exclaiming his love for military history. He reminded me so much of my dad, someone that I can't normally talk to because of a language barrier, but when we talk about guns and military history, that's when we truly bond. I walked out today with what felt like a new family member. Henry was super appreciative of what I bought, even though I bought very little, and was grateful that he got to meet another Chinese person who loved military history as much as he did, saying it was a rare sight. For anyone interested in military stuff, I cannot recommend more but to visit him and buy as...
Read moreYears ago i would visit Henry for a good travel duffle bag in a pinch without breaking the bank. Sometimes I'd find him napping on a pile of the display bags and I'd come back later xD but no matter what your surplus needs are he would always share a story and treat you like a friend as well as a customer.
When I mentioned that I had been to China several times he shared stories of the mainland before the industrial manufacturing push and how when he came to the US as an immigrant he was amazed at how much money he could make even though he was paid nothing more than a few dollars an hour.
That gratitude and hard work are still manifest in the shop today. Even though the neighborhood has changed Henry has preserved the NY character of merchant & customer relationship in a way that's a living testament...
