Brooklyn Denim Co. — Local services in New York

It takes something very special for a small, brick-and-mortar clothing boutique to survive in the age of e-commerce and fast fashion. Over the course of several weeks, I came to see Brooklyn Denim Co. as an exceptional place staffed by true jeans aficionados. I'll never buy my jeans anywhere else again.

The story:

A few months ago I wandered into Brooklyn Denin Co. to buy a pair of jeans. I care about style, but I'm not super confident about clothing in general. Luckily, a BDC salesperson patiently worked with me to try on different styles of jeans. With his help, I selected a pair of jeans that I felt confident about. I tailor took my measurements, and I left the jeans at the story to be altered.

I got a call a few days later. The jeans were ready to be picked up. However, when I arrived to pick up the jeans, they were, well, missing. Perhaps the jeans had accidentally been given to another customer, or maybe they had fallen behind a cabinet in the back of the score. What mattered was that they were absolutely nowhere to be found. Worse, they were sold out of the make and size that I had ordered.

Over the course of a few weeks, the store worked with me to make things right. In the early days of the situation, they sent me home with a backup pair, and later, when the original pair failed to show up, the owner sat down with me to hand-select a pair that was as similar as possible to the one they had lost. Suffice it to say, I would never get that kind of service at Levis.

Every business makes mistakes, but very few can turn a mistake into a lesson in exemplary customer service. Brooklyn Denim Co....

My wife and I were in the shop a few weeks ago, and she saw a very cool artisan tote that she loved. When we got home to Boston, I looked on the website with the plan to order the bag for her birthday, but it was not listed. Unsure of the exact description, I called the store and inquired. An amazing sales associate named Pythagore patiently took photos of every bag matching my description, and texted me photos of each until we found the right one. He took my credit card and shipping info, and made sure the item was shipped express so that it arrived in time for my wife’s birthday this weekend. He even called me back to confirm the UPS shipping info, and texted to let me know it was en route. The bag arrived today, and I am looking forward to giving it to my wife for her birthday! The gentleman overseeing the denim / clothing section was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in New York. My husband and I came in near closing and had put our wet umbrellas in the bucket at the entrance — only to have the worker in the coffee shop take one home. Sensing our panic, the gentleman came to our aid and tried to get in contact with the other worker. We had thought it was a lost cause and went to dinner next door with disappointment. To our surprise, the gentleman came into the restaurant to personally deliver our umbrella! My only regret is not asking his name. Though we’re returning to Tokyo, the next time we are in the neighborhood we will definitely be making a purchase in his section of the store. I’m in need of a good pair of jeans anyway!
