Want to start off by saying that this could have been a great experience had it not been for the guy I took the class for. The receptionist was great very helpful. In came to class on a Saturday. I wanna say November 27, 2014. Almost 2 years ago. I came to class about 15 minutes late. And the guy, a young guy with like tattoos I think around his arms and/or chest, not the tallest guy in the world, got all in his feelings and made a bitchfit because i came late. I tried explaining my train from queens had some delays along the way which contributed to my lateness and he just wouldn't listen. Now I understand instructors teachers etc. take lateness as disrespect and maybe rightfully so, but he was just seeming like it was something personal or an vendetta. He proceeded to embarrass me in front of the class several times first when I first got there and made me get dress to do sit-ups and proceeded to tell the class while I was doing sit ups "this kid thinks he can just come to my class late and just be apart of my class, he's got another thing to him, GTFOH". I was shocked at the level of disrespect, just beating a person while they're down, literally lol . He already had punished me for coming late, why try to embarrass me and kick me down throw dirt on my name. I stuck through the class I didn't leave when he first said something and not even after that did I decide to leave, although I thought about it. I'm doing sit-ups for a guy who's just plain disrespectful and embarrassing me. It made no sense to stay, and although I felt like giving him a piece of my kind after class about his actions, he had the NERVE, no, the AUDACITY, to say " don't ever come late to my class again, your being very disrespectful". Oh really me, disrespectful? He's lucky I didn't get his name to air him out or report him, but if any of You guys see this review just be on a lookout for how I described him as, if he stills work there, he shouldn't. You can tell young guy like him has an ego, and he feels like the man, and when Somebody comes late, he feels that they're stealing his shine, and has to act on it. That piece of scum, I wish I did learn how to fight in his class and use it against him and whoop his ass the little dweeb, probably was a nerd in high school and how that he's strong and can fight as an instructor he feels "hey I can do what I want i could probably beat this guy up anyway". Such a corny type of guy I swear but just as a warning to my fellow people and Google users be ready of him when you see him and be prepared for him so you don't stay shocked like me and not say anything, BE PREPARED TO TALK BACK TO THAT LITTLE WEASEL PUNK. Little girl skirt pansy. Anyways be safe guys and Brooklyn martial arts, shame on you for having an imbecile like this working in your facility, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Very...
Read moreIf this was based off of classes and instructors, I'd give them a solid 4 stars. However, it's a 2 because of their dishonest sales tactics when getting you to sign up for a membership.
I came here to join my friend as she's been taking classes and really enjoys it. I wanted to get into BJJ and Muay Thai as well, so decided to join her on the 3 class $19.99 special they advertised on their website to get a feel. After the first class though, they sell you HARD.
I voiced my concerns about lack of time due to work and possibly not being able to commit to 2x weekly for a full year, even though that was the best deal. I'd also be traveling from Astoria to Brooklyn, so that makes it even more challenging. They promised that if I were to sign up for the year, I can freeze my membership, downgrade to 1x weekly, or pay per class as needed. This made me feel better, so I decided to go for the annual contract Needless to say, work immediately blew up and I was only able to make it to the gym twice over the last 2 months. I called the gym to downgrade my plan so I can just pay per class but was told they don't offer the option to pay per class. I know this is not true because my friend has brought guests to this gym before and they paid ~$30 each for a single day class. I then asked to downgrade to the 1x weekly option, but was told downgrading is not possible. I am only able to upgrade. At this point, I was extremely frustrated since I signed up under the premise that I could downgrade at ANY time. I asked her to just cancel my membership. She told me I needed to email a different email address to process my cancellation. Once I got in touch, they offered to downgrade my plan, but it was too late. I wanted nothing to do with this shady practice, so I paid the $195 cancellation fee to get out of the contract.
If you're able to commit to the full year, great. But if there's any chance you will need to change your plan, don't believe what...
Read moreI came here off a groupon deal and was seriously disappointed. Long story short: if you're a soccer mom trying to lose that stubborn baby fat, you can get a great workout at a really affordable price. But if you're serious about MA and enhancing your skills, this might not be the gym for you. It wasn't for me.
PROS: affordable monthly rate compared to similar gyms many staff members actually train and compete in the styles they teach, so the potential to learn something worthwhile does exist there 2 of the 3 trainers I took classes with were friendly, knowledgeable, and at least tried to make me feel welcome
CONS: McDojo-esque business practices, including mandatory 12-month contracts and extra fees if you want to take an "advanced" class to actually hone your skills No matter how much past experience you have, if you come here off a Groupon deal, you will be treated differently than their regular students management came off as very cold and money-grubbing. These people are in a hurry to get your money. They will shove a sales pitch down your throat before you have time to wipe the sweat from your brow after your first class not all of their trainers are 100% professional. One day, I overheard a trainer complain about how boring her job was and how she'd rather be anywhere but there teaching students. Another trainer showed up to class one day so lackadaisical that I could have sworn he was high, and the class he taught was insultingly easy.
I originally bought a 10-class package, but gave up after my first 5. That's how frustrating and unrewarding my experience here was. Feel free to tear up my class card, BMA. I won't be...
