For much of my youth, I sang. Musical theater, youth chorus, a capella groups, gospel choir...you name it, I sang it. Here and there I took lessons, but mostly, I just tweaked my approach to fit whatever song I was singing/performing, and didn’t give much thought to whether or not I was doing right by my vocal chords. I lost my voice pretty regularly, but chalked it up to allergies and acid reflux, and continued to sing the way I always had.

After grad school, I stopped singing, mainly because I suddenly had fewer opportunities, but also because work got in the way. Two years ago, after years of wanting to get back into singing, I stumbled across Krowne Vocal School, and signed up on a whim. After a few emails with a Jennifer to determine my interests, goals, and musical background, I began taking lessons, and haven’t looked back.

To say my technique has improved would be an understatement. I feel and sound like a healthier singer—with a bigger range, stronger belt, and fuller tone. I understand the mechanics behind the voice, and take care not to hurt my vocal chords thanks to Jennifer’s expert advice. After an unfortunate incident at an outdoor concert a year and a half ago, I’m proud to say I haven’t lost my voice since—a feat, considering I used to lose it 3-4x a year! What’s more, I really look forward to my lessons. Jennifer gently (but expertly!) pushes me to not only be a more confident singer, but also a more comfortable performer. It’s clear that she and the other instructors are knowledgeable, talented, and make great efforts to ensure that their students are not only honing their craft and developing healthy habits, but are having fun while doing it.

I’ve taken private lessons, group classes, and have now participated in three of KVS’s student showcases, and I can’t see myself stopping any time soon. Thanks to Jennifer and the rest of the KVS team for helping me reconnect with something...

Jennifer is AMAZING! I'm a baritone/bass and I came to Jenn to work on stretching my range upward, as I was having trouble doing so comfortably. My background in singing was purely choral; so when it came to higher notes, belting was not something that was encouraged. The point was to blend and thus my falsetto was what I was accustomed to using. While there is no issue with using falsetto, I recently became a singer in a corporate wedding band which required me to discover my solo voice/style. I also have to now sing songs in their original key (Bruno Mars doesn't ring the same using a light falsetto) Jennifer has been terrific in helping me find the correct placement for my voice and getting me accustomed to what it should feel like to reach notes higher than I thought possible - in full voice. I have been meeting with her on a regular and my progress is noticeably better. I can recall what it should feel like with ease and if I'm feeling tight or strained, I can recognize that I'm doing something wrong and adjust accordingly. I not only can sing higher, but my lower notes have gotten richer in the process. I also have a plethora of warm-up techniques that help me to loosen my jaw and get my voice in the correct placement. Every lesson with Jennifer is filled with both laughter and breakthroughs! I always leave feeling in full control of my instrument and ready to hit any stage! I recommend her to all my singing friends and a few have joined me in taking lessons at the Krowne Vocal School. I continue to recommend her without any reservations....
