So sorry for the long review- but they’ve earned it. Short version? Shop here. The people and the clothes are amazing.
Long version? Since I moved to New York for school I have had some of the hardest, and frankly, worst times of my entire life. I have faced an incredible amount of hardships, but I gave everything to be here- this was my dream. After being scammed into an illegal apartment that sold my credit information so I couldn’t get another apartment, a legal battle with an Ivy League that hired me to hide their money trail, undergoing a mammogram and diagnostic breast cancer tests, being a full time masters student, working full time, and having more insane things happen I thought ‘wow, nothing could be worse than this!’ My breaking point? When my mom decided to ship my clothes to me in the middle of midterm testing, and the mailman instead of putting it in the door or hiding it - left the boxes that contained everything I have ever owned out for everyone to see. They were stolen. All the clothes I saved my money alllllll summer to purchase. Clothes I bought so I could feel like a ‘real’ New York woman here to make my way and own the city. Dresses, new Madewell slacks I was excited about, blazers, jeans. My degree I just earned in May was also in those boxes. Whoever is walking around Harlem with a BFA in Technical Theatre, good freaking luck pal- it’s hard out here. Sentimental items. I felt so helpless. From the stress of it all I have lost 30ish lbs.. My jeans from Madewell that I bought before leaving literally fall off of my body. My belt was on its last hole and my pants were STILL falling off. When I moved I was a 16-18W in my Madewell jeans. Now I’m a 10/12. But they were all I owned. I came to shop at this Madewell location expecting to find maybe a few shirts, but I definitely NEEDED jeans. People at school started to notice my clothes don’t fit and I didn’t feel good in them. Unsure of my size I just started grabbing items I thought were cute - and that is when Sara approached me and started me a room.
I’ve worked retail to pay for school and I know how it goes. Customer service is a dying art and sometimes you just need a job. But Sara? Wins all of the awards for simply being a good human. Which is so rare. Everyone at this location loves what they do, and it shows. Even if it’s not Madewell they love, they love the fashion. Sara was incredibly knowledgeable about the different styles in the store, and pulled literally everything I needed with ease. I am a curvy/plus sized woman so jeans?? Just the worst. Sara knew right off the bat what styles would look good on me, what sizes I needed, and what washes. She made a hard situation so much easier by being good at what she does, and by being a genuine and quality human. Also who knew Madewell did hemming?? This really poor graduate student is about to be tailored to the nines.
No one tell my mom how much I spent at this store, and how much I plan on continuing to spend here. The clothes are always quality and the people at this location are worth the time to come see and talk fashion with. Thank you so so much to every soul working here, you never know what someone is experiencing and every single person in here made me feel confident, empowered, and excited - all things I have lost in the chaos here. Thank you, thank you,...

I was walking by at closing time and saw there were a few people inside still shopping and I needed to pickup an item I had bought. I walked in and stood in the doorway and a floor worker let me know they were closing. I asked if I could just pickup an order I made quickly and she said yes and another worker asked my last name and went to grab it. I continued to stand in the doorway so they knew I wasn’t going to meander around. A girl who I assume was their manager quickly approached me, and in the rudest manner I’ve ever experienced in a store, told me they were closed and I needed to leave. I tried explaining to her that another worker was grabbing an item I had already purchased and I just wanted to grab that quickly. She said again, we’re closed and then the worker walked up with my order. The manager then pulled the other worked aside and was getting on to her while I was still standing there. I’ve literally never experienced such a rude employee, much less manager in my years working retail and shipping retail. I love madewell and the floor workers were really nice. But the manager was...
Read moreI’ve been a huge Madewell fan for at least the past 10 yrs. Lately, we’re not in alignment as much.
In the past, I depended on Madewell for consistently delivering on quality leather goods: tote bags for work, leather boots, loafers and cute casual bags. As an educator, those were my staples. They also had great smooth cotton graphics tees and my faves were when they’d collaborate with orgs such as the NY Botanical Gardens.
Rummaging through the sale sections during off season is usually catch some great cardigans and blazers for the fall and great bandannas and jewelry to add a little razzle dazzle.
Nowadays, the prices have risen astronomically. Little stackable earrings are now on average $58 and the clasps are weak and poorly made. One day after purchase they’re coming apart. Purchase a purse, the leather is trashy. A lot of the classics that myself and half the teachers at my school used to purchase have been removed from the rotation. Super annoying!
Madewell, please get back to basics. I know the political climate has driven production up , but don’t loose your entire customer base and maintain integrity around...
