(6 months ago) Nice people but price gougers.
Update
(10/23/24) I recently received an email about price increases for new customers, which reminded me of my last experience here. I haven’t been back since I was charged around $75 for what I assumed would be a standard haircut, beard trim, and shape-up.
After the barber finished, I noticed he didn’t give me the shape-up. When I asked about it, he responded with something along the lines of, “That’s extra, and I don’t have time.” This left me scrambling to find another barbershop for a shape-up, as I had an important interview the next day.
At first, I thought the price might be justified because it’s Manhattan, but I’ve never seen a haircut go for $75 in that area. For context, my current barber does house calls for $80–$100, and I typically pay $45–$55 for a full-service cut.
I originally had them at a two star rating but I’m dropping it down to one because of outrageous pricing.
(10/25/24) I absolutely was charged almost $75 for a cut that did not include a shape up, and I had to go straight to another barber afterwards.
Right now their page on Booksy shows the following prices.
$50 for hair cut and beard trim Plus $20 dollars for a shape up Equals $70 dollars Plus 20%...
Read morePHD Barbers "The Doctors of Barbering" (you can keep that quote as my gift to you.) I called to see if they accepted walk-ins before going and Arnold picked up to tell me "of course". When I arrived he greeted me hello and by saying if it was me who called. He then proceeded to welcome me and asked to sit at Jay's booth. Jay came in afterwards and greeted me to which I began to tell him about the styled cut I wanted due to having a small crown bald spot and a receding hairline. I showed Jay the different styles of cut I grabbed from Google images and he recommended the curly fade. (I did previously to arriving, the day before, starting to do it myself to save some money but decided to have it done professionally). To which I told Jay what I did and why. He took it, listened and the results was far beyond my expectations for a first time curly cut. Jay took to detail and provided me what he thought would best fit by adding a few extras, the lining of the fade and the areas where it needed a little fresher look. Happy with the cut and will be returning in about a month or so....
