After posting on Thumbtack for a personal trainer, I received a number of replies. The one that impressed me most came from James from Progressive Personal Training because he asked me many specific questions about my medical history and workout goals.
After a short trial period, I signed up for a year of private sessions. I like the fact that I have three rotating trainers: James, David and John who are clearly professionals in the field. Never do I feel they’re “winging” my workouts as I have felt with other trainers, but have a specific plan for me each time I come. They keep computerized records of each workout, and frequently refer back to them. They’re very exacting in explaining how each exercise should be done and work patiently with me until I get it right.
I have to say PPT’s facilities are on the modest side; they don’t have the latest high-tech equipment. But the place is kept clean and very good, inventive use is made of their equipment. For instance, I particularly like that I’m always learning new variations of standard exercises, including squats and crunches.
After about 3 months, I’m quite sure I made the right decision in going with PPT. I see a definite difference: my body is stronger and more toned, and my core feels much more solid.

Read moreI first came to PPT two months after having hernia surgery, eager to get back to the gym but wary of injuring myself. I'd been going to the gym, on and off (because I'd often simply get bored), on my own for more than 20 years, with mediocre results. I wanted to do better. After trying a couple other trainers at my own gym, who didn't seem to understand that I was a 40-something guy with a gut who'd just had surgery and not a 20-something bodybuilder training for a triathlon, I decided to try PPT. I told myself I'd go for a month or two to learn how to work out more effectively, and then I'd go back on my own. That was almost a year ago, and I've been going twice a week ever since. Why? The trainers. They're a great lot, and all of them have taught me how to work out--not just harder or for more time, but smarter and more effectively--and they've also helped me rethink things from nutrition and my eating habits to my overall health. They pay attention to my goals--I'm never going to be a swimsuit model, lose 50 pounds, or pose for a muscle magazine; that's not why I'm here. These guys know more than I do, and I learn things from them...
Read moreI've been working out with these guys for over a year and they are amazing. I came in with a chronic sore neck, and with a goal of being able to keep (get) in shape and get strong ski legs. A year later and I almost forgot how much my neck bothered me. I feel much better and even after only 3 months of working out with them before last winter felt stronger on the ski slopes. PPT always gives me a great workout, all in a very safe and educational way. Before starting they check in with how I'm feeling, and a few times I walked in sore and walked out feeling great! They explain and demonstrate each movement and are very encouraging and fun to work with. The facilities are nice, the gym has all the equipment needed in a bright intimate space and most importantly with no waiting for something to be available. The showers and changing area are also clean and well appointed....
