Came here unplanned after walking around the South Street area and noticed the building. I believe it used to be a restaurant before the Pandemic, but is now just a Museum. It's a small Museum without an entrance fee, so was worth stopping by. Since it's part of the National Park System, it was staffed by several Park Employees/Volunteers. They were all friendly and gave interesting historical facts about the Tavern. There's 3 rooms to view replica items from the late 1700's and early 1800's. It only takes about 15 minutes to make it through the Museum and it's worth a visit.

City Tavern was once the fanciest place to eat in the city, if not all of the young United States during the late 18th century. Founding Fathers wrote home to their family about the dining experience. Unfortunately, the city tore down the original building in 1854, and the 1975 restoration is also in sad shape and not open to the public. I hope it will be restored and open in time for America250.

As time passes by, a lot of historic buildings are demolished over the centuries. People come and go and demigraphic and geography of city has been changing for economic reasons. In the old days, this tavern was the central meeting place for drunks and gathering.
