Hello and Nice to meet you reader ! My name is Marisa. Daughter of Debra Hester - Mother's Backyard, Sister of Chanel - LeiaLotus on YouTube, and granddaughter of Ms. Alice Clarissa Young (Mrs. Hester was her married last name). I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and Baptized at Tanner Chapel. My sister was born in California but baptized here too ! I have fun and happy memories attending Children's Sunday school here with other black, white, Asian and Latino children. I fondly remember my grandmother waking up at 5am every Sunday morning to attend the early service because she tried to wake me up around 5am too (not such a fond experience at the time but I appreciate her for it now!) Sadly, my mother moved my sister and I away but, we would spend the hottest summers with our grandmother and attended her grandson's interracial wedding held at Tanner Chapel. Beside my grandmother's house, Tanner Chapel will always be the closest, most consistent thing to home I will ever know.

My grandmother was born in 1919 in Helena, Arkansas. When she moved to Arizona, she chose Tanner Chapel. To Tanner Chapel, she brought her three children, one was my mother, her two older sisters, my great-aunt Lucinda and Great-aunt Mary and three of her grandchildren. She was an usher for the longest and eventually became mother of the church. She passed away in her sleep at Hospice in Sun City, Arizona on November 24th, 2015, at the age of 96. Her funeral services were held at Tanner Chapel and she was buried in Arizona.

My grandmother was an HBCU top graduate: receiving her BA and MA, a Debutante, an educator, Eastern Star and a very active member in both her communities. Plus, she was humble, funny, friendly, generous, loving and a well-respected lady wherever she went. She came from a family full of Deltas (Delta Sigma Theta). Most of all, she was a woman of faith and a beautiful example for friends and associates of all ages and ethnicities but especially for my sister and I. Since like spirits attract, I beIieve she chose Tanner Chapel for all the best reasons.
