Antoine's Formal Wear — Local services in Portland

I had a really bad experience, which is unfortunate because so many other people seem to have had good ones.

I made an appointment about a week in advance. I arrived on time, but was told to wait for about 10 minutes. I was looking for a suit for a wedding, but wasn't sure if I wanted to rent or buy and the two people on staff were extremely unhelpful at explaining the pros and cons when asked. Eventually we got to measurements, and after taking about 3 measurements the tailor went in the back and came out with things for me to try on (there should typically be many more measurements taken). All of it fits terribly, generally a tailor will do that and then measure and adjust, but no, they asked if I liked how I thought it looked. The jacket was clearly too large and boxy, and the pants were about 4 inches higher than my ankle. When I asked if there was anything they could do they told me that they would take my number and I would have to be seen by the owner so to expect a call to schedule an appointment. The whole process felt rushed, and that they justed wanted me out of the store from the moment I walked in.

Two weeks later I didn't hear anything, so I decided to go to another local suit shop. The difference in care, the number of measurements, and quality of service was astounding. Adele did high quality tailoring work on my wedding dress. I purchased my wedding dress at a sample sale, and it was several sizes too big. Adele did an excellent job taking the dress in and reshaping it to fit well - she suggested some modifications to the neckline and dress straps that definitely helped effectively modify the dress to my size. I was quite happy with the dress on my wedding day, thanks to Adele's high quality work and time investment on a fairly complicated project.

I would note that I was sometimes a bit disappointed by the customer service at Antoine's, which is the reason for 4 stars. I do agree with some of the other comments that Adele could be quite direct or condescending at times, which was sometimes stressful. For example, I decided to remove the train of my dress, since my wedding was outdoors, and Adele was initially very critical of the decision (I decided to remove it anyway). If you're looking for someone to alter your wedding dress, congratulations you're done looking. GO TO ADELE. I'm telling you this woman is magical. Okay so I bought my wedding dress, they convinced me to size up TWO sizes. I did because they're supposed to know what they're talking about, anyways I was devastated. I couldn't let go of my wedding dress on my body the whole thing would fall to the ground it was so big. I was so nervous and didn't want to trust anyone with it though because its such a big deal. I got a recommendation to go here and I felt more confident that I'd be in good hands. So, I show up and they treat you SO well. Do you know how hard it is to alter such a simple dress? No?
