they keep their hamsters in totally inhumane conditions. the wheel they provide is mesh which is known among hamster owners to cause broken feet, and it's too small for some of them to even fit in it. when they do fit, it bends their back in a way that is painful and causes spinal damage. it's so small and improper that i dont even see anyone sell them anymore. the best part is that they literally carry more humane care necessities on the shelf directly behind the hamster enclosure, but theyre too cheap and/or careless to let their own animals enjoy them. thats only the most harmful among the list of negligent choices they make. i brought this up to an employee because i was so horrified by it, and her response was to laugh and say "yea".
that's not to mention that hamsters are solitary, nocturnal animals who become stressed out extremely easily, and they choose to put them in an open enclosure for 100s of random people to mess with them however they want all day, so they arent even allowed to sleep. due to their solitary nature, they also cannot be housed with siblings after 4 weeks of age or they will fight each other, sometimes to death. ive been going to this pet store since childhood and i would see hamsters with untreated wounds more than half of the time. i will never spend a dime here again, once learning about animal care i realized i dont want to support abusive pet practices. given the level of "care" they give to their animals, i also have to HEAVILY assume they get them from pet mills as well. even petco and petsmart are better than petland, which is pretty sad
i just dont understand, even if they dont care about the animals, why they would choose to provide such gross "care". it's not expensive to do and it would look great for them. i lose some hope in humanity when i see things like this i just hope something changes soon. plz do your research before you adopt a new pet and before you trust+support a business like this
edit- this experience happened a bit ago but i also wanna add that a blonde female employee attached to me the moment i walked thru the door and proceeded to follow me around half of the store for literally several minutes asking me a bunch of random uninvited questions about my hamster as i tried to check out the toys. it was the most uncomfortable shopping experience ive ever had and i was one moment away from telling this lady to leave me alone before she thankfully did it on her own. it was very very creepy and this alone would have probably made me never want to come back even if they didnt mistreat their animals lmao. every facet of this store is...
Read moreCute pups but I wouldn't trust the sources. Went in with my boyfriend last weekend and saw a woman playing with one of the merle colored French Bulldogs they had available. I overheard the sales rep telling her that merle Frenchies are "rare" and that theirs are "purebred" and because of those two "special" factors it would cost $10,000 for the full puppy package or $5,000 if she just wanted the dog itself. OUTRAGEOUS! NO RESPECTABLE OR ETHICAL BREEDERS PRODUCE MERLE FRENCHIES. To even get a merle Frenchie you have to breed it one of two ways: The first way is to take a purebred Frenchie and a dog that naturally does carry the merle coloration (such as a Chihuahua) and breed them together. Then the offspring of that pairing is bred with another purebred Frenchie in order to get a dog that maintains Frenchie features while still having the merle color. Technically, because the direct parents are both Frenchies (even though the grandparents weren't) you could try to claim the dog is "purebred" even though it really isn't. The second way, which is heinous, is to directly breed two merle Frenchies together but the issue with that is merle to merle parents result in what is considered a "lethal white dog" and puppies of such parents have been documented to be as high as 86% blind, deaf, or deformed (even if it's not visible or fully developed straight away). In fact, having double merle parents has also been linked to allergies, autoimmune disorders, organ defects, neurological defects, and even premature death. A quick google search will tell you these facts - seriously, first link and everything. Either way you slice it a merle Frenchie is not "purebred" or "rare" and it is horrible of Petland to claim that they are in order to up sales. I would hate for an unassuming buyer to spend so much money on what they would be falsely led to believe is a safely bred and healthy puppy only to shortly be blindsided by incredibly high vet bills, or worse, the premature death of their new little family member. So remember, always research an animal before buying and if you can it's best to......
Read moreMy family and I purchased our first puppy ever from Petland Racine. We came in knowing nothing about dogs and found the staff very helpful. I trusted them fully which was probably the wrong thing to do. We fell in love with our puppy that was on SALE for $3000. We were told our puppy was 12 weeks old at the time and I had concerns about being too old to be potty trained, the “rumors” about puppy mills and was reassured that none of these were issues. Upon picking up our puppy they told us that his surgery is healing up well. We were confused and asked what surgery (since none of this was discussed the day prior when paying for him) and they said his umbilical cord hernia which is very common for puppies to have. They then also gave my husband (I wasn’t present at the time) an antibiotic for him to take for 10 days as a “preventative.” As soon as we brought our puppy home we began noticing blood in his stool. The antibiotics actually seemed to make it worse. I asked my friend who is a vet ti check out our puppy prior to taking him to the vet that Petland only allows us to take him to, per their warranty. Our friend stated that 1. The Puppy for sure had parasites and that is the only reason they would have prescribed an antibiotic, 2. There was NO way he was 12 weeks old since his baby teeth were not all fully in yet and his testicles had not yet dropped and 3. There was no signs that a hernia surgery ever took place. Hearing all of this instantly made my stomach drop. I had trusted them. I still had doubts that my friend was right because I didn’t want to be believe that they would lie this much to us. We ended up taking him to the Petland approved vet. They stated that he had both Giardia AND coccidia and did not have a comment for me when asking if Petland knew this and didn’t tell me. I asked them to look at his “surgery” site and they said that it looks like the surgery “didn’t work” and they would have to do it again. I would never buy from Petland Racine again since I felt like everything I was...
