It's something I heard about for years from my in-laws, taking the ferry out to Mackinac island. We got the deluxe tour that went under the bridge and the story behind that. It was chilly on the ride out but once on the island it was pleasantly warm and we paid to have our bikes taken over. We couldn't go all the way around the island because of road work, but yeah, no cars, only bikes and horses. Personally I didn't care for the horses dropping apples everywhere but they did have crews cleaning up behind them. it's a cute day trip, quite a bit of shopping and dining at the docks. We rode part way around and then hiked the bikes up over the summit to the other side, stopped at the fort and cemetery on the way. If you're fit and have a modern bike maybe you can ride to the top but i couldn't and My wife didn't even attempt it, well maybe parts of it. anyhoo it's all down hill from the fort so hang on to your brakes.

You have to take a ferry over to the island. There are no vehicles allowed on the island. Transportation is accomplished by bike or horseback mostly. You can bring your own bike if you don’t want to rent one. The island itself is a tourist destination with overpriced lodging (in my opinion) and activities. However there is a trail that wraps around the island with marked destinations along the way like arch rock, it’s a nice trail but heavily utilized making it crowded at some points especially during peak vacation times. The trails that go through the island aren’t used as much if you’re looking for space. The views are perfect, still worth a visit , I personally would plan a trip late August early September.

The best way to see it all is to bring a bike on the ferry to the island. My friends did this while I rented one for about $100 for a couple of hours. So much to stop and see/do. A magical little island to get lost on.

An excellent tourist destination with so much to do. A short ferry ride will bring you to what could be days of entertainment. You can explore the carless island on either bicycle or horse drawn carriage. Probably the best place to visit in northern Michigan . The idealistic town is worth exploring and the food...
