San Antonio could be run a lot better. And no I'm not going to mention the homeless, that's such an overhyped NIMBY complaint, and it's really a USA/capitalism problem, not a municipal problem. Anyways, I do think the river could be better utilized. How about instead of just having those motorboat tours, we also add gondolas and guided kayak tours into the mix? What's so cultural about big motorboats anyways? They pollute the river too. My guess is somebody with that motorboat tour company is in cahoots with somebody with the City of San Antonio, since that seems to be the way everything's run here. Anyways, next up, let's get local rail transit. I don't think San Antonians realize just how pathetic it is that places like Cleveland and Salt Lake City have commuter rail despite being half our population. It's downright embarrassing that we boast about being one if the biggest cities in America while in reality we're a collection of self inflicted Home Depot/Whataburger/Auto dealership suburbs. Maybe I just answered my own question about why we don't have commuter rail. Still, change has to start somewhere, and commuter rail combined with other Strong Towns initiatives could fix our broken model of building/expanding highways every two years. I get it, most San Antonians are not smart enough to understand the collective benefits of public transit. (Don't get me started with our poor education scores). But if you build it, they will come. Look at all the people taking the buses. Via shouldn't be allowed to keep derailing rail transit, no pun intended. Buses alone for a city of this size just isn't practical. Also our airport is pathetically small. I wonder if better outside connections would help our city be less, how should I say, monocultural? I feel like everyone's a clone of the same person here, and that's not good for a city if this scale. And for goodness sake, get a minimum wage. A municipal minimum wage is possible, and it's the only way to make the city more livable. I'm SO SICK of hearing "oh but the low cost of living". Pffft, the cost of living would have to be practically free for San Antonio wages to be enough to live off of. I understand that companies are only paying such low wages due to the applicant/employer ratio being SEVERELY in the employer's favor here for some reason, but a minimum wage would help correct the evil effects of that until the ratio corrects itself. Now, for some things San Antonio is doing right, I love what they've done around Hemisphere Park and the Pearl. But unfortunately, beautifications are not enough to keep me here. I came here a year ago looking to build a productive life here. San Antonio, you've failed me, and now I must go to a city that has its act together. It's not me, it's you. I do genuinely care about the place though, as I've formed a bond with it. But bonds alone don't pay the bills. Time to move to a better economy. Farewell, and good luck. Have fun with your pickup truck startup business economy. I want a real job, not hauling junk to some scrap man's yard. Gosh, San Antonio jobs are even too...
Read moreI'm very new to San Antonio but I tried to deliver for spark. Just trying it to see what it was like . Well I'm also 8 months pregnant so I had my daughter come alone just to help me with the heavy items. My first delivery was to City hall I had never been downtown so I wanted to be sure we were in the right place before we got the stuff out the car . The security guards told us yes we could bring it in, well that was easier said than done because it was two cases of glass water , two cases of drinks and something else that wasn't heavy all from sams. Well it was this nice lady police officer offer to help us because she saw my big belly and she saw us struggling. We carried the first load in and it was one case of water left . I was going to take that myself but she said "no I'll get it, that's too heavy" well as we were going in the reception I'm assuming was coming out with a cart . Mind you it was kinda too late for that . But she rudely approved us and said to the nice officer "you shouldn't be carrying that, that's her job, she's the delivery person. I responded well she offered to help because I'm pregnant and I was struggling a little . She responded "well that's not my fault, I was just saying " that really rubbed me the wrong way because if it was a cart at the door for me to grab, I would've been able to take it all in myself. And secondly I was just trying something with the delivery thing and she completely discouraged me . And thirdly if she's rude to a pregnant person who's just trying to get extra cash I'm sure she's rude to everybody and I hope she doesn't have kids or grandkids because I know she wouldn't want anybody speaking to them in that...
