I came into ask about pastels because Scream advertises that this salon specializes in vibrant hair colors with posters all over cap hill as well as a tiktok page. before i could even talk to a stylist i got hit with "we don't work with textured hair" from an employee working the desk. i felt very unwelcome as a bipoc & I left nearly in tears. I understand if a salon simply does not have anyone that specializes in curly -cuts- to avoid people coming in, booking, having expectations, then leaving with a cut they hate (the hair/salon industry itself already favors only teaching white hair but that's an entirely different discussion) but, again, I came into to ask about color and no discussion was had before i was practically told off. i'm currently blond so it would be weird to assume that my hair doesn't "take" to color if that was the issue. this was only a brief discussion with one person so I won't attribute this experience to the owner, however, this experience has left me with a bad taste in my mouth and i doubt i will book in the future, which really disappoints me as I was excited to find a queer owned salon that specializes in vibrant colors :/
Edit: It’s been a year since I wrote this, genuinely don’t know what happened here. I promise my hearing works fine but I know the stylists here have *curly hair certifications and I literally know curly-haired people that get their color done here. I still don’t know what to make of what the receptionist said to me and am still very hurt and confused from this moment but I’m 100% reconsidering my image of Scream despite my first visit here 🤷
*though this happened before most had completed their curly hair training if i...
Read moreI've been going here for years and absolutely love it! It's a small business owned by a woman, which also gives me pride to support. I have been having it dyed a natural but on the brighter side red, which is often really hard to pull off unless you get it juuuust right. They mixed a formula until they found a perfect, and beautiful color just for my complexion and features, after only the second try (and the first try looked lovely too, but wasn't quite perfect). They have my unique-to-me formula on file so that it's perfect every time.
I get my hair cut by Jordi, and she does an absolutely beautiful job; I get compliments all the time. All the girls are incredibly professional, yet super friendly and warm, which is sometimes very hard to find in high-end salon. I've previously found to be the case that the higher end the salon, the worse of an attitude they sometimes have.
Color is a bit pricier ($80 and up), but definitely worth every penny. I think cuts for women are $35 and up, which is a steal for the quality.
I also usually do not want to make conversation with my stylist (nothing against them, I just don't get much "quiet time", so most of the time definitely don't feel like talking, but that's just me), and I've found that they're great at reading your demeanor and whether you want to chat or just left to relax quietly.
Anyway, I would highly recommend! Give...
Read moreThe first time I came into the salon, I asked for a jellyfish cut and Sage did an amazing job! The second time I went in, I wanted a trim and the stylist who did it, Jade, kept asking me "Does this look even to you?" like girl YOU'RE the professional. They ushered me quickly out while my hair was still damp and only when it dried did I see how uneven, choppy, and straight up ugly the haircut was. Hate how they let me leave the salon with wet hair. When I called to get it fixed, they told me they'd schedule me to get it fixed for some time this week. I never got a call back, never got an appointment to amend the atrocity that was this haircut. Ended up having to cut off the obviously longer than the rest of it pieces of hair by myself. Have gotten numerous comments from friends and family this week asking if I cut my hair myself because it looks so uneven. Do not let Jade cut your hair unless you want to deplete your self confidence. So unprofessional. The second star is only for...
