This store allows collectibles, DVDâs, etc to be traded in for cash or store credit. Many people come into the store each day and trade items in.
I have brought sealed figures (in their original boxes) into this store in the past, and had never had an instance where my items were tampered with, until my most recent visit.
I live in New York, so itâs not the easiest thing for me to drive all the way out here to visit the store.
On my most recent visit, the store was interested in several of my figures (valued at approximately $30 each) and wanted to give me some cash for them. I politely declined after finding out that I would be receiving about $2.25 cash per figure. These VERY LOW trade amounts are COMMONPLACE for this store. They give out the LOWEST possible trade amounts for your items. The whole point is to make your money, their money.
I drove home with the figures, thinking little much else about the transaction. Come to discover after Iâve returned home that the store cut open the sealed figure boxes on 3 of my figures. I did not give them consent to open up the boxes, nor did they notify me that they wanted to open up the boxes. Because I would have told them, âDonât open them up.â
They destroyed the taped seal to three of my figure boxes. That was the original factory seal.
I sell my figures elsewhere if I donât trade them in at The Exchange. And customers DO notice this. The figures lose value because the original seal has been cut.
Figuring this act was (rightfully) unfair, I called up this store to ask for a refund on the value that I had lost on these figures, solely because I had brought them into the store for trade. Keep in mind that I did not ask for a FULL refund on the figures, which would have came out to about $90. I only asked for the value that I had lost out on because the figures were opened, which is approximately $20. Thatâs a reasonable request.
In the most ignorant way possible, the male employee who cut open the figure boxes (the receipt says that heâs named ZB) told me that the seal was âliterally just Scotch tapeâ, and that they needed to check inside the box for if I was lying about what was inside. WOW. They just automatically assume that their customers are lying to them? Why would you assume that when youâre giving away CHUMP CHANGE for each trade item you receive?
I understand that some customers are untrustworthy, and that the seal on the figure boxes LOOKS like ordinary Scotch tape. But this tape was put onto the box by the original manufacturer.
If an online buyer were to look at these figures now, and notice that the tape is missing, they wonât CARE that The Exchange cut open the otherwise-sealed figure. They would notice that the tape has been cut, and demand a lower price for the item. And thus, I have lost value on my figures as the seller.
I would have accepted anything, whether it be store credit, cash, or replacement items from this store for what they did, without my permission. But good olâ ZB, the man who worked on my trade, just laughed on the phone, gave me no compensation or reason to return, and brushed me off with a few uninterested-sounding âIâm sorryâs. The words âIâm sorryâ donât mean anything when youâre not authentically sorry.
How do I know that they wonât destroy my trade items next time?
I will be following this up with further communications and phone calls to The Exchange. I may even look into if this will hold up in court. Theyâve got store security camera footage of ZB opening up my figures, donât they? đ
I will NEVER return to this store.
If you want to trade in random items for cash or store credit, go to your local pawn shop. Theyâll provide the same customer service experience to you and will give you just as much cash, if not more, for your items. And they wonât DESTROY your items.
This store deserves none of your trade-in items for their profit.
Pictures provided down below for how they cut open the taped seals on, not THEIR figures, but MY figures.
Also, âZBâ is one of the dumbest names...
Read moreI've purchased a number of things at The Exchange since it was recommended to me by a friend shortly after I moved to NW PA about five years ago. Their staff is friendly and knowledgeable, they have good merchandise and equipment, and I appreciate supporting a business that's not GameStop or Amazon.
I recently got married! In preparation to merge my stuff with wife's, I sold off a handful of old games and consoles. I didn't get a ton of money for them, but it was worth it to me not to have to sell it on Ebay and/or Craigslist one piece at a time.
I ended up recently using the store credit I received to help purchase a used original Xbox One. Since we're currently in the middle of moving and organizing up our home, it was 40 days between when I purchased the console and when I tried to set it up on a TV at our new house. It turns out that they gave me the wrong power cord! I had even remarked on that when I purchased the console, saying "Huh, no power brick?" I was told that it was inside the console. (I now know that this is only true for the Xbox One S.)
When I made a trip back to the store tonight with the incorrect power cord and the receipt, I was told that I could NOT exchange the incorrect cord for the one I should have originally been given, as it had been 42 days since my purchase, 12 days past the warranty window. However, they were willing to SELL me the correct power cord for $30. (For context, the incorrect cord the gave me retails at $4) I understand that I am technically in the wrong for not setting up my console sooner and verifying that everything works, but I personally found this response to be completely ridiculous. There was no offer of compensation of any kind, not even store credit--just a simple "I'm sorry." This is bad customer service and not at all a good look for a...
Read moreSo it seems my last review was deleted so Iâll post it again the exchange is not a great place to sell anything of value to they will look up prices of your items and go with the lowest possible price they can get away with giving you for example I sell some of my funkos now and again when I may need some extra cash and I donât mean one or two Iâll bring like 20 or so to them and funkos donât really lose all that much value in a few months as most people are aware but theyâll offer me 13 dollars for 20 mint condition funkos and that to me is a bit ridiculous bc funkos are at retail 13 or more individually unless their special editions so i donât know what math this place uses or where they get their info from concerning the resale value of collectibles but donât ever bother selling anything to them in addition to all that the staff isnât always great while their looking up stuff for you they whisper and point at you while your just simply waiting for them to finish looking through your things to give you a price the manager also seems to try to mansplain things to people he thinks donât know what their talking about as my wife has come out of the store several times saying he acted like they were stupid 10/10 donât recommend shopping or selling things here more than likely they give you the lowest amount possible for your collectibles and then sell them for triple the price as Iâve seen some of the funkos Iâve sold to them have price tags for triple or quadruple the Amount they gave me for them originally if your looking to buy anything from them their prices for that are also ridiculously high Iâll reiterate it again donât bother shopping here or trying to sell...
