(Cross-posted from Yelp; wrote a review on behalf of my wife)
SUMMARY: From Halmoni (grandma in Korean) to hottie! No, not me, my wife! I didn't think I'd have such a great time waiting for my wife to get her hair done, but we sure did at Lena beauty salon. My wife looks like a college girl again, thanks to Ms. Oh :D
And before I get too far into this long review, Ms. Oh just recently set up shop in Great Neck from Flushing, so I hope all the lovely NY women read this review written by an observant husband and give this shop some Yelp love!
BACKGROUND: We're visiting my mother in law and at the last minute, my wife wanted her hair colored (too many greys) and get a long-needed haircut. Her original stylist in Flushing is MIA so my wife found this salon and Ms. Oh fit an appointment for my wife this morning.
EXPERIENCE: Well as a husband on vacation, I decided to tag along and was intending to drop my wife off, park, and pop in to find out how long the appointment would take. Ms. Oh said about 1.5 hours so I didn't think it'd be worth it to drive back and then come back (Northern Blvd is still congested at that time). Ms. Oh was so happy that I was Korean too, and she warmly greeted me. She thought I was Taiwanese as well.
Anyways, all three of us got to talking about our life in TX, how we've adjusted from living in big cities (NY and SF) and now in north Dallas. Ms. Oh is a really engaging and kind lady. She immediately made me and esp. my wife feel very comfortable and I'd say we had what we Koreans refer to as 정 (jeong), which according to one Korean-English dictionary means "A warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you bond with a person, place or thing. It doesn't require effort and often just happens." :)
So as far as Ms. Oh's skills, looks like she did a fine job! Hopefully I didn't get the order wrong here! During the time I was there, she first patiently asked my wife what kind of style she was looking for and made a suggestion here and there that helped my wife narrow down the look she was going for. Then they discussed the color of the dye and off she went. I'm no expert, but what I did observe was Ms. Oh taking her time doing her business and having casual conversation with my wife. She was very amused by my wife's Korean phrases that she picked up from watching a lot of Korean Netflix dramas :)
After the haircut, she did a thorough shampoo, rinse and went to the coloring. After letting it set, she did the blow dry and waalaaa grandma to a hottie! :D
Oh in between all of this, Ms. Oh made me a cup of coffee, which was really nice of her.
RETURN VISIT? Yes! So we plan to return in a year, which is our usual visit cycle so we're looking forward to it. In fact, she asked when we will return too :) ...
Read moreGreat first experience visiting Lena beauty salon last week! Lena and her assistant are amazing! I initially made an appointment to get balayage hair coloring done but after consulting with her for the first 5 mins, I realized she was absolutely correct in recommending that I get a digital perm. I have naturally wavy hair but it has been very frizzy and not smooth in texture (thick n coarse hair). She could tell that I don’t like to fuss too much with my hair and want to just wash n go. Coloring was recommended for a future visit and it was more important to get the hair texture right. No matter how beautiful the color would be, if I am not willing to smooth out or style my hair daily, it would just not be worth coloring and damaging my hair further. A digital perm gives the waterfall effect of keeping it straight on top from the roots and waves at the ends of the hair without having to style it every day. This would be the fourth time I ever got a digital perm and I have shoulder length hair. Lena cut it perfectly to frame my face and give me the waves I wanted at the ends that were smooth and would only need a serum on dry or wet hair. I received so many compliments and I noticed that it took years off my face and framed so that my double chin was hardly noticeable. I’m super picky but I trusted her completely and was not disappointed. I highly recommend her level of skill and her rates are very reasonable compared to what I am used to paying. She also does makeup and updos. I can’t wait to go back when I’m ready for that balayage I originally wanted on my smooth non...
Read moreAfter 15 years with the same hairdresser in Queens, I’ve decided to try someone new. I noticed my hairdresser was not doing what I wanted and I noticed that my hair has been very dry. I did a little research and I found this cute little place in great neck. Right around the corner from my job and I decided to give her a try. This was the best decision I ever made. I was able to get appointment pretty quickly. Lena is an absolute sweetheart. My hair was a few different colors from all the mistakes my previous hairdresser had made. Lena made my hair one color but not only that … she made it the color that I have been wanting for a long time. All I did was describe it to her And she nailed it !!! I looked like I just came out of a photo shoot.. my family went crazy for it. My husband noticed right away and he never really notices anything. Lol I went back to her for follow up to have my roots done and again just a wonderful experience and the color is beautiful. My hair is soft, she uses the best supplies. Her wash chair is like no other. It feels more like a spa chair. I almost fell asleep. I cant say enough about Lena. Bottom line give her a try. She’s one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met and her work...
