I learned of Cape Abilities two weeks ago from Habitat in Yarmouth. I will say that the staff is kind and well intentioned. However: I think it should be understood that when someone is attempting to donate items, they, too, are well intentioned. They were worn, French cast iron grills, panini press and a vintage Pyrex.
QVC? Unmarked? No! Would a real cook recognize the quality and weight and value? Uh, yes. But if Cape Abilities is more Ethan Allen than real thrift, then I definitely got the message.
To be told that my items were "too dirty" was insulting and offensive. If I thought that my cookware, while most certainly well used because I am a former chef, was "dirty," I would not have offered the donation. Who actually would do that?
I came away embarrassed and completely turned off - most certainly never will return. There is definitely a racial bias in that store.
My next donation will be a thesaurus sent via mail.
If your staff is disinclined to accept items, they should not use language that makes a donor feel like the themselves, are "dirty" and use "dirty" cookware and/or are ignorant enough to pass off items to Cape Abilities as if it is some kind of dumpster. I know what and where a dumpster is.
The irony: I only returned there because I was by an employee the previous day that the manager would call me the next morning about a Le Creuset casserole I wanted to buy. Why? Because that's the cookware line I will be using on my online show for low-income and disabled children who want to learn how to cook. The manager never called and the casserole pan had been sold.
I have plenty of daily, potentially rich opportunities to experience racially motivated situations as a disabled Black woman. I'm normally not the one who gets to decide.
No thanks. This is not a true thrift store nor is the customer...
Read moreWas only there a few times. Friendly staff & many interesting & nice pieces/items for sale. Just not at the âthriftâ prices one may expect, when thrift shopping. Could do better in that area, especially since so many other thrift & consignment stores do! I understand they are subsidizing their organization, so maybe thatâs why. We used to get their Summer Buckets & Back Packs for a Summer Rental I used to manage for the owner. Always appreciated by incoming guests, for an added âWelcomeâ gift. We were actually disappointed when they discontinued them. We enjoyed supporting Cape Abilities through getting them. Always looking for Nautically themed items, for that âBeachyâ feel for guests, we stopped in their new store a few different times, between the 2 of us. Store is quite large, clean & well presented. Just sorry I wonât be heading back, anytime soon. Went a few times, thinking maybe I just hit an off week the times I did. Owner did the same. Nope. Prices still at ânewâ, or close to, for used goods. Thereâs a lot of competition on Cape with used, consignment & thrift shops. Plus, the weekly Estate Sales that have some great stuff. Savvy shoppers know the drill,...
Read moreFirst, we support CA every chance we get. Their farm store is our absolute favorite place during the summer. My daughter and I visited the thrift store recently and it was not the experience we were expecting. We found a painting for our new home, and decided to check out the clothes. The woman working in that room began huffing and puffing bc apparently my tween was in her way. My daughter was instantly upset bc she thought she had done something wrong. We decided to leave with one purchase. The women at the checkout were rude and acted like it was a bother to ring up our purchase. We wonât be back, and would not recommend. CA Farm Stand is amazing and the staff are the sweetest, thrift store,...
