Quality pub food in a happening joint. Have been past numerous times but never stepped foot inside, and I was surprised to finally see how big the place is with its various seating areas. We visited on a Friday night and the main section was pretty busy and giving happy vibes with the live singer providing tunes. Opted for a seat in The Dining Room area for a quieter environment, but with better lighting than the Grenier Lane Bar section. Our order: * Love Buds plant based schnitty, $33 - w lemon, chips, garden salad * Middlesbrough chicken parmo, $30 - w béchamel, cheese, chips, garden salad * Flash fried calamari, $21 - spiced salt, lime, aioli * Kids Fish, $12 - battered Atlantic cod, chunky chips, tartare, lemon * Lemon lime bitters, $5? Not sure why but the QR ordering wasn't available and once I got to a staff member at the bar I was told there was a 45 minute wait on food, which turned out to be pretty much on the mark. All the dishes were great though, with the calamari and the fish in particular impressing us - the calamari was very tender and the fish batter remained crispy to the last bite. We thought the Love Buds schnitty was quite good too as a meat alternative, and gave the real meat parmo a good challenge though the chicken still won by a nose. The cheese element did give it the edge though so maybe next time I'll get 2 parmos and swap one schnitzel out for a plant based version. Meanwhile the straight plant based schnitty itself is currently available as part of a buy 1 get 1 free promotion so go try it before the end of March.

We had an enjoyable lunch here on a quiet Sunday afternoon just before Christmas. The P&W is an airy, light and spacious place, where you can have a super comfy and satisfying dining experience. Service is fast and efficient. Ordering is done at the bar counter, and within a few minutes, the food is brought to the table. We ordered burgers, chips, dumplings and calamari. It was all first class, and nicely presented to the table on stylish crockery. The calamari was fresh and tasty with a crispy batter. The dumplings were prepared by an expert: they were just the right texture with a nice, soft coating and fresh vegetarian filling inside. They were simply, but beautifully prepared with love, care and attention to detail, and served with a tangy soya sauce and a sprinkling of bay leaves. The ambience is casual, laid back and relaxed, and with a cool refreshing breeze blowing in, it’s the ideal spot to enjoy a drink and a lunch on a summer Sun afternoon with friends or family. Being so big, tables are well spaced out, making for good acoustics and we were easily able to converse. There are ample toilets, clearly signposted and they’re clean and well provisioned. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience.

Today Thursday around 5 on the afternoon, I walked in the restaurant after checking myself in the we page as they ask at the door (with a sign) there weren't any staff there to guide you in or tell you what to do next (Wether to sit and wait for them to take your order or order yourself at the bar) so I walked to the bar and ask the guy there if I should just sit down to which he answered "yes sit and then come back when you know what to order" however he didn't gave me any menu or anything and just went to talk to the next customer. After that I sat on an empty table waiting to see if someone was going to bring me a menu, but nothing. So I looked for the menu online to see what I wanted to order and I went back to the bar to order. I played 44 dollars for a tiny little plate of gnocchi and a mojito. When I saw the price on the online menu I thought it was OK but when I saw the amount of food in that plate I felt sad. After I finish my tiny dinner, and since I was still hungry, I went to the bar again to order some wedges and another drink. The wedges were OK and it's a good amount for a good price. Nevertheless, I couldn't finish so I wanted to ask for them to put it in a take away container. The 2 staff members that were on the restaurant walked by my table at least 4 times, each time I tried to called their attention by raising my hand, calling them, etc. But nothing worked. I end up putting my wedges on a carry on bag that I had in order to take them home. The only explanation I can give to this behaviour from the staff, which having worked in several restaurants before I know does not justify at all the bad service, is that I look pretty young in comparison to what seems to be their regular customers and therefore could be that they didn't take me really seriously. If it wasn't because it was the only place open around and because I just have finished a 6 hours appointment at a nearby salon and I was starving, I would have left the place as soon as the guy on the bar didn't give me any menu. I give them a 1 star review because they have beautiful facilities and because my order came out pretty fast, nothing else.

First time here & thank god we found it as everything was closed & under construction in the area. Easy to walk to just two blocks down from Cultural Centre bus stop, Museum & Art Galleries. The restaurant is split into two sections - one being more an open air area & the other that’s a bit more indoors but they provide the same service & food regardless of where you sit. The lady who served us was so so lovely & attentive. The food portions were very decent, good pub food variety menu & easy plates to share if need be. There’s plenty of space for prams & mobility vehicles with easy access to the venue. Couldn’t find any public toilets in the area - only found staff toilets - but I’m sure they’re nearby if you ask. Parking in this area is difficult; there are paid carparks near by & in surrounding streets pending construction at the time. There are buses that stop nearby - 199, 197 & 60 City Glider. Overall great place to eat casually no matter the group size or for a quick bite on your own.

Editing to add so that I can reply to the comment left by the Restaurant. We will never return to this restaurant after the service we received. To be offered a simple drink to compensate for an inedible, expensive meal is not enough. We were a table of 7, and therefore spent a considerable amount of money. And all you could offer was a drink... And just looking through other recent reviews, I can see that you often have unsatisfied customers, and all you can do is say sorry we'll do better... I wish I could give negative stars. My husband ordered the surf and turf, and every single adult at the table agreed that the prawn part of this meal was disgusting. It did not even taste like prawn. Staff unwilling to do anything but offer a beer. Also, the bathrooms. Toilet paper all over the floor, constantly running taps (wasting water...), you have to awkwardly hold the toilet roll with one hand whilst pulling it out with the other to avoid ripping the toilet paper into tiny little pieces.

If I'm being honest, I'm not going to be going back to a Pig n Whistle after this experience. I'm not mad at the staff, because I can tell when a restaurant is underpaying and overworking their staff. It was obvious in this experience that the staff hated working there and were overwhelmed even with a very low amount of customers. We booked an 8 person table with special arrangements for a cake and when we each arrived for the reservation no one made eye contact with us, we had to get the attention of staff over and over again, it was a special occasion that only happens once in a while, and this put a significant low mood across the table. Strangely enough the cocktail I had was awful, very watery. The food was alright, well presented and fresh, and i believe staff did the best they could in an environment which is clearly oppressive. But if I could go back I would have gone to a different venue.
